VW Bus as a Camper?

My wife wants to get a camper for camping. I thought it would be fun to buy an old VW Bus instead and fix it up a little. There are already provisions for camping on certain models, including an expandable roof, beds, and cabinets. I also found a place that does engine swaps so you can have 130hp instead of 40hp. Seems like a nice deal and cheaper than a camper...any of you ever own a bus? Are they super tippy? How's reliability?

I own a VW transporter, not a camper. save yourself the headache and buy one already running. Engine maintenance isnt hard, but you need to know what you are doing. Is there a good classic VW mechanic in your area? Make sure he takes a look at it first.

www.thesamba.com will have all your VW bus needs. Feel free to PM me as well.

The Eurovan or whatever it's called would probably be better...

But I'd much rather have a fullize truck based van converted to a camper.

I own one right now. Bought it last October. The later models really aren't lacking in HP, mine is a 1973 and will do 70 on the highway (if it's flat).
As far as tippiness, the right set of tires goes a long way towards fixing that--most people don't put the right kind on them. Good shocks make a lot of difference too.
Reliability will depend on far too many factors to list--but you probably won't find an easier engine to learn how to work on.
Plus there's a HUGE online resource for it, various newgroups, and you can find people on the Aircooled Interstate Rescue Society list who are along your journey in case you break down.

My dad bought a 1970 VW camper/bus that was running well and just restored the exterior. It's nice, he still doesn't like to drive it out on the highway though. Last summer he bought a 1981 VW Westfalia camper/bus which is more functional for both driving long distances and sleeping in.

Yeah, the switch to a water-cooled engine provided more reliable heat and better A/C.

The inlaws have a VW eurovan. From my observations, it's a pita for them. They've made do with it, but...

repairs are very expensive
gas mileage is poor
(rather than go on with this list, I'll suggest

Why don't you get a nice pop-up camper. They're pretty light and virtually any car with a 6 cylinder would have no problem pulling one. Pop-up camper is just as fun. The "this is fun" factor you seem to be referring to seems to be more of a "look at me, I have a VW bus" factor. Your wife is right: get a camper. You can work your way up from pop-up to a comfortable size. There are lots of used campers on the market (unless you want to buy new.) Remember: if you purchase a camper with a built in toilet, there are tax deductions available to you (if you itemize.) After the initial ding for driving a brand new camper off the lot, campers tend to hold their value for quite a long time.

Ourselves, we have a large pop-up camper from the early 70's. It's in excellent condition. It's got that "hideous" Brady Bunch color scheme (orange, brown, yellow), so for fun, we decided to go with it. All the dishes (plastic), etc. follow that color scheme. We purchased the camper 3 or 4 years ago for $500. It was a great investment. We were recently offered $700 for it. (No.) Note: most campers will have some sort of little stove in them, etc. Who cares - if you're camping out during the summer, like most people, it just makes them too unpleasant inside; you'll end up doing most of your cooking outside instead.

If you want more camping tips, etc., or even pics, just PM me.
