Obviously they would have had to have some kind of clue as to where it would be at a certain time, and attempt to collide with it.. as for actually 'getting near' and hitting it, well ... they would find a way.
Anyway, it's a pretty scary scenario. And I think it was pretty obvious they would be targetting the White House. Why wouldn't they? But this just confirms it.
What would have happened if the White House had been hit?
Weird, the plane past over the white house once, circled back, and hit the pentagon. BTW, i think the plane would have hit AF1 on the ground, white the pres was boarding, if it was there.
4/5 of the pentagon is still functioning... if the white house blew up/got on fire/was destroyed obviously the president would work somewhere else, but striking the President's home would like stiking every American's "home".
Losing the president is not as important (knowledge wise) than a freakin jet going into our most important intelligence building in the US. In my opinion.

Maybe, maybe not, but as skoorb said, the white house would have been more important symbolically.
AF-1 normally does not fly with a fighter escort. It did yesterday after the attacks. If they were planning on hitting it and timing was on their side, there would have been no escort at the time.
True, probably, but things would really be in a state of mayhem around here if we had to swear in Cheney as the new prez. At least, there would be no question about retaliation.
