W.H. and AF-1 wre targets

isn't this really the second White House in existance? I remember from history class in HS that the orginal one was burned down long ago, maybe in the civil war. I don't remember exactly. Anybody good in US history?

Well, I wouldn't swear by it but I am almost positive I saw something on PBS that said it is equipped with on-board fighting equipment. Can anybody provide any links to say otherwise?? Not that I have to be right, I'm seriously interested in finding out....

What we do know is that AF1 and the WH were in fact targets. Just think if this morning the WH was a smoky wreck and the first lady was dead. (She was there) That could have easily been the case.
Yesterday no one had a clue as to the extent of the attack. Sure they knew that there were no more airliners in the air, but that was not the only possibility of attack. Even if the SS was 99% sure they would be able to protect the Pres, why take the chance. Wait a few hours for the all clear then come back to Wash. With the level of planning that went into the attack, nothing could be ruled out. It would not be a surprise for the terrorists to have set up some form of an ambush.
The fact is that the pres was in Florida in the morning and back in Wash by late afternoon. Good timing on a normal day much less a day like yesterday.

Alright I'm done with this little sideshow of American popular ignorance. Thank you all for the amusement that you have provided. You have continued to amaze me with your countless replies. I don't often get sustained interaction with people of such strained intelligence. It is eye opening in a sad way of course.

Yes and I'm sure the "radar" would detect the plane, just like it detects the other 30+ commercial planes that fly over DC everyday. As for it hitting the white house with it's anti-aircraft weapons...the White House is right down the street from the Pentagon, all it would take is a last minute change. The Commercial Aircraft is very large as well. It is true that they could have possibly shot down the aircraft, but the reckage alone would have leveled the White House

Anyone who belives that AF1 has offensive weapons is smoking crack. I suppose you belive that weapon bays will suddenly open in the belly of a 747 and fire AMRAAM missiles guided by a fire control radar in the nose of the plane. AF1 is hardened against electromagnetic radiation as well as having the best countermeasures money can buy- chaff, flares, ECM gear, etc.

Also over the domestic US, there normally is not a fighter escort for AF1. Only for international trips is AF1 escorted by fighters as SOP. Of course with the events yesterday, there was a visible escort for AF1 as there should have been.

For those who criticised the president yesterday, you don't gamble with the life of the head of state. If he had been killed, the confusion to reestabilsh proper lines of command as well as the public uproar would have hindered our ability to respond to the attacks. The members of Congress as well as the VP would have to have been rushed out of Washington to secure locations as well as law-enforcement being forced to split their efforts to investigate both tragedies.

There are strict procedures to protect the president in the event of an act of war. The fact that he left to return to DC in under 10 hours to me was itself a brave move. I have rarely felt so nervous watching the president walking out of Marine 1 to the White House alone- I know its irrational but the president is more than just a head of state- he is the symbol of the United States itself.

And one thing more- there was no idea yesterday to know if additional attacks were planned and by what means they would be implemented. The pure audacity and knowledge required for the attack on the WTC clearly pointed to a sophisticated organization that knew our failings and deficencies. This attack was one out of our nightmares, but for such a well funded organization as well as the very freedoms that the US grants, I wouldn't put chemical/biological weapons or even nuclear weapons out of their reach. Assuming that no more attacks were planned or will occur is simply naive and foolish- the same ignorant arrogance that resulted in the events yesterday</edit>

LOL, I am not on Snows side what so ever, but lets get real, they said in the same reports that they put this info out about the targets of WH and AF1 BECAUSE of the criticisms mounted by republicans, democrates, etc on why he took so long to get back to DC. Any intelligent person that knows anything about planes knows that there aint no way in Hell a 747 or whatever size it was is going to be able to maneuver into a position to ram it, thats just ludicrous. Look, the threat wasnt just the threat of a 757 ramming into Air Force one. For all the secret service knew, there were terrorists on ground with surface to air missle launchers or god knows what else. What would have happened if Bush had rushed back not knowing that the crashed 757 had some toxic biological agent onboard? We would probably have a dead president on our hands...You and snow can play Rambo all you want, but the rest of America is playing Real Life. A living President if much more valuable then a dead one.

Fact of the matter is, we are ALL ignorant, and those who claim otherwise have not only transcended all others with their ignorance, they're manifesting their immaturity as well. NO ONE knows exactly what went on, why Bush went where he did, etc.. The simple fact is (or at least what we're told) that he wasn't in DC at the time, and I'm going to believe that there was a strong reason for this decision.
