weeeeee, got my MSI HD4830 to 809MHz furmark stable, with the gddr3 at 1168MHz. Yes, yes, everyone's probably a bit more interested in seeing the HD4770 OCed instead. >_>

Temps reached about 70C for the gpu and close to 80c for other stuff. I had to volt mod my HD4830 from 1.2V to 1.32V. No voltage mod for the memory though. That sounded too risky and I didn't know what to do for that anyways. But huzzah for a successful first volt mod. ^_^

However, when I ran furmark, there was a kind of whiring noise coming from my HD4830 that wasnt there before I started OCing. I've heard other people have gotten that too, but that's not a terribly bad thing now is it?

Thats quite an overclock you got there. I got my 4850 to 740/1150 but without any change in voltage, I feel it can still do more since I stopped at these settings. But nevertheless, these 4800 series chips can overclock like mad, get what you paid for and more.

Nice OC. I've gotten my 4850 to 775 and it seems stable there, I'd love to hit 800+

Are you using the stock cooler? The whirring noise is probably the capacitors in the power circuit; nothing major, but I'd take a look at them every few months to make sure that they aren't starting to bulge.

wow. i should volt mod mine, it hits 800 core on stock voltage, is it hard to volt mod it?

Thanks. I'm using the stock cooler MSI put on it. Exact card here.
I didn't know caps could make noise though.

nope. All it look was one simple pencil mod for my 4830.
This thread at techpowerup forums is where I got most of the information on how to do it, for my particular 4830.

Volt mods are different for different cards. So, just keep that in mind.

Mine HD4830 will only go above 800 if I overvolt it. I ended up with a final overclock of 790 Mhz (1100 memory). The temp only gets to 55C at full load, though, so I'm very happy with the performance versus temperature (and I can keep the fan pretty quiet while gaming).

I'd like to see an overclocked HD4830 compared to an overclocked 4770.

Actually I'm wondering the same exact thing.
I wonder how well the gddr5 overclocks though. I've heard they're rated for 1.1 GHz. So, it sounds like memory bandwidth are pretty similar between the two cards, when OCed.
The 4770 will likely have the edge when it comes to core speed, however.

Apparently, the MSI HD4830 doesn't have the capability to set voltage through the BIOS. So I did a hard volt mod. It was incredibly simple though (albeit dangerous. messing with voltages is risky after all). All it took was for me to just use a pencil and draw on top of one tiny resistor (to reduce overall resistance across it, if im not mistaken). It took me a couple tries to get the voltage up to where I kind of wanted it.

I'm quite happy with my HD4830's overclock, considering that it's like HD4850 performance for less money. Though I do wonder how much of a performance gain I would see compared to a 4870 or 4890. Since I'm primarily gaming at 1920x1200, I would expect the gddr5 might show some significant impact. But then again, those cards are about twice as much as my 4830. =/

btw, does anyone know how the whole power phase circuitry works? In general, more of these power phase things seem desirable (cleaner power supplied, etc), but how does that work? Or maybe there are articles somewhere explaining these kinds of things?

I can't seem to raise the voltage on my MSI 4830. Did the pencil mod but it seems there is no change in the amount of overclock I can do.

Do you have a digital multimeter? If you do, you can easily check if voltage was raised through the mod.

You should also make sure you are using a number 2 pencil. And penciling the right resistor. Who knows what would happen if you did the wrong one. >_>
