Ok first the basics make sure you practice good hygien before going to your interview, I'm serious.

Use the bathroom, take a shower, get your haircut, shave, brush your teeth, use some mouthwash and wash your hands.

I would wear a pair of decent $30 khaki's which are clean and ironed out, a simple 2-3 button Polo shirt, shoes other than sandals or tennis shoes/sneakers.

Don't act to shy or cocky know-it-all, ask questions, seem eager, blah blah blah. Or you can do what I did, BS your way through the entire interview, it worked for me!

cashman - forget what everyone else here has said. I've worked for OMAX for over 2+ years. I'll tell you - I didn't even dress up for the interview - sandals, a pair of shorts, and a tshirt (I didn't want to dress up because I was going to the mall beforehand). Answered a question or two, a week later I started my first day there. Of course not all managers will be like that though - just wear a pair of khakis and a nice shirt. And there's almost nothing you can say to not get hired, except "I plan on doing nothing all the time" or "stealing is ok", especially since all the Office Maxs/Depots/Staples are hiring for "Back to School" - they're just hiring a lot of people to handle the rush of kids they get whenever the kids go back to school.

Anyway - just make sure you get anything they say in writing, like how much you're getting paid and other stuff. (I quit because I got screwed over)

My advice to you would be to relax and make eye contact. I'd also do the dress up thing.

Good luck!

You'll do a lot of credit to yourself to dress nicely. My typical interview clothes are some khakis, a button down shirt, and maybe a tie. Be shaven, and spend some time on your hair. Look respectable! Otherwise, it doesn't take much. I worked at omax for a year and a half; very little brain power is required. Just don't bullshit your way to a sale. Otherwise, good luck!

Just don't bullshit your way to a sale.

Unfortunately most of the sales goats at OM/OD/CrapUSA lack the knowledge to answer most technical questions so they BS their way thru a sale.

"Don't worry ma'am, this will do everything you need it to do and more...."

cashman, ive worked at officemax (was there for 7 months) and it kinda sucked. You will get stuck stocking shelves for 1-2 hrs after the store closes assuming you have afternoon/closing shift. I met a lot of cool people there tho, so I liked it a little. They have gay discount for employees - a whopping 5% at christmas.......

Anyways, just wear a dark blue polo shirt with some khaki pants, since thats what they wear. He will be like OMG YOU ARE PERFECT!

And dont expect much more than $7 starting. $7 is base pay for OM.

And as ragingBITCH said, watch your paycheck. They are horrible with paychecks. Nearly every check I got there I was missing at least a few hours. Dont let them screw you over. Tell your manager every damn time it happens, eventually they'll learn to do it right. Stupid F-ers.

Listen to your DAD. Sooner or later you will find he knows one hell of a lot more than you think he does.

Dude, if you're gonna go to the OM at Melbourne Square, i am VERY sure it's a cake job. Most of the traffic is in and out to go to the mall. There isn't that much business, and from what I was told from this chick that works there, they "work", meaning stand around all day, and go on the innerweb in the back. Shouldn't be too hard to get a job, and you can visit EB, get Oakleys for 20% off, and other small perks. The only problem is that you might succumb to the temptations of the mall and spend all your not-very-hard earned money there.

i know you're excited, but don't get too riled up... like ragingbitch said, as long as you're relatively competent, you'll be fine. I walked into best buy one day to see a sign, and decided i should get a job wearing jeans and a tshirt... an hour later i was hired. Now, looking back i shoulda just said screw it... as it sure as hell wasn't worth it... but these places usually don't care TOO much. I'd say khakis and a nice shirt tucked if you wanna play it safe.

when you get to interviews for internships and whatnot.. that's when to break out some of the nicer lookin stuff

None of the retail chain employee impress me

If u hang around here enough, u will beat 95% of the employee based on your knowledge on any particular product...

things really pissed me off when I shop retail is that.
If I don't know a product and ask for spec, most of the employee don't know,
I ask for if there is any PC hook up to the internet so I can look up the info

Suprisingly, most Office superstore like Officemax and Office depot don't have a single d@mn internet ready pc let customer to use to look up info.. This happen in some bestbuy as well...

and for compusa, they have pc available using those stupid AOL browser, POS but better than nothing...

Thumbs up for circuitcity, PC with fast internet everywhere in the store

and I would say that any anandtech member working at a retail is a waste,
I agree that, life suck thought if u need $ and have no choice

Its seems like hot girls really do sell stuff better, or at least attract more customers. From now on, I'm only hiring good-looking people in my store. I've seen very few male customers turn down service plans offered by a hot chick. People turn me down all the time.

Guess my theory was right We had this application sitting in the office where she used to work for 3+ years as a stripper - we all joked about how if she didn't sell a plan that she'd show the guy her breasts or something, and if that didn't work she could do a pole dance on the checkout light. (Yea that's sexist but considering a month ago there were 0 females working at our store you think some weird things)

No but honestly, having women sell plans helps.
