I've got a server running Windows 2000 Advanced Server, this is the file server and print server. It is also the PDC. The domain (GALAXY) must be logged into to be able to print. I also have a broadband cable internet connection in the house. The connection from the cable modem goes directly to a Linksys Cable/DSL router. From there, a single connection goes to a Linksys wireless network access point.
All the machines in the house have wireless NIC's and login to the access point using DHCP. They get assigned their IP addresses and the DNS and other various values propogate down from the router. That being the case, my WinXP machine has got it's DNS fields pointing to the ISP's DNS servers.
When I try to login to the GALAXY domain, there is a delay of sometimes up to 5 mins while XP tries to resolve the PDC and then fails and resorts to NetBIOS. Searching the newsgroups suggested that the solution was to point the XP machine to the local server's DNS for quicker resolution.
Well I don't think that works in my case, as the server itself has a static IP but get it's internet connection from the router. All the DNS work is done at the ISP.
So if I point my XP machine to my Server, do I have to create a DNS server on the PDC to redirect requests to the ISP's DNS? Does anyone know how to configure the DNS on W2K Server to do this?
