W2K Encryption Question

I've recently pieced together a little external usb/firewire drive I'll be using to carry around lots of stuff. Some of the stuff is private and I'd like to secure it so that if the drive is lost or pilfered, it will at least be very inconvenient to get at the data.

Most of the systems I'm connecting to are either W2k or XP. Should I just use the built in encryption or is there a better solution?

Don't use EFS is you're moving the drive between machines. The decryption key is part of your user profile and if you log on as another user on another machine you won't be able to get to your data.

SeTeS, if you need something basic, PGP is pretty good, as it will let you encrypt lots individual files (alas, not the filesystem). It's encryption isn't the greatest, but it would be a decent deterrent at least, which is what you said you need. Personally, I'd use Windows Privacy Tools (http://www.winpt.org) which is based off PGP, but is OpenSource, and therefore good ;-)
