W2k peer networking problem - who has it working?

Win2k peer to peer networking won't work and it ain't hardware.

This has got to be a problem with my settings within W2k. Cause peer to peer networking works just fine between my Tbird system and my laptop when I boot the Tbird in Win98se. (The laptop is running that as well.)

Also, my LinkSys router/ switch shows both computers attached and responding normally by its status lights, even when I'm booted in Win2k Also, both computers show up in the router's/switches DHCP table. Even after I release and renew a few times. And when I renamed the Tbird computer on the W2k side only as a test, that new name shows up in the DHCP table on the router.

And finally, I get internet access just fine when booted up in Win2k.

So it's got to be some setting in W2, that I'm not doing right, which keeps me from seeing the Laptop in the "Computers Near Me" folder. Instead only the Tbird shows up there.

The workgroup name is precisely the same on both computers and in both operating systems on the Tbird.

I've got IPX/SPX loaded as the transport protocol for file and printer sharing on both computers.

Both Client for MS Windows and File and Printer sharing for MS Networks is loaded in the Network configuration box in Control Panel for both computers.

Yet I can see the laptop and its directory structure when booted in W98se on the Tbird, but NOT when the Tbird is booted in W2k.

I'm signed on as administrator. Is there someplace else I need to go to, to turn on peer to peer file/printer sharing?

Help!!!!!!

Not a solution yet, but why are you using IPX rather than TCP/IP?

Can you PING from one computer to the other in Win2K?

Yes, TCP/IP is turned on as well. (Wouldn't be able to get the internet over the lan without it.)

I'm REALLY stumped. I've rooted around in everything in W2k related to Networking that I can find and tried stuff without success. Since my W2k is an OEM version, Mr. Softie doesn't want to hear from me!!!

Make sure you have netbios running.
I think 2k sets the netbios by whatever the dhcp server tells it to. I have no idea what the linksys would set in the dhcp setting for netbios, maybe it doenst set it. So go into the tcp/ip properties and make sure netbios is enabled.
Also check the bindings and make sure F&P sharing is bound to the same protocols on both boxes.
I'm not positive and I'm too tired to check, but I dont think netbios gets bound to IPX by default either, so you should check that too.

Hi Y'all,
I'm having very similar problems. I have three comps right now setup with 1-98lite and 2-win2kPro. One Win2k and the 98lite machine network great, and everything is clear through my linksys router/switch. The other Win2k comp can ping the other comps, but can't ping the other computer's names. If I try to open NetworkNeighborhood-Computers Close to Me, the program freezes. I'm lost completely. All my comps are running static IPs. Thanks.
As Always,

MrChicken --

Netbios was in fact not turned on on the laptop. Win98se networking didn't need it with IPX/SPX turned on and the Client and File Sharing services bound to it.

But I tried turning it on on the laptop, as well as on W2k on the TBird.

No change, unfortunately.

I wonder if there is some security setting that somehow is blocking networking. I don't think I've turned anything on there, but I don't know.

so far only one user account, which is the default Administrator one with a password.

Ok , back to basics.
Can the 2k box ping the laptop? Either by name or IP or both? And vice versa.

As for security, you can actually set up 2k so that it only talks to computers that use certain levels of encryption, but that is not the default.

forgotten how to ping. How do I ping another lan computer?

I've got progs. that ping remote locations setup on the laptop, but the Tbird isnt' that far along. This problem has sort of stopped me dead in my tracks in the application migration.

Thanks heaps for making the effort.

dougjnn,
I agree with Mr. Chicken, you should start at the beginning. Here is my suggestion:
*Now, you may know how to do this, but I'll write it for those who have never done it before and might read this. We were all there once.
---Tbird
I like to start with TCP/IP networks before setting up an IPX net. If you have the 4 port linksys router/hub, reset the router by pushing on the small button on the front of the linksys with a pin of some kind. This will revert TCP/IP adresses to 192.168.1.x. Now set your tbird tcp/ip adress to 192.168.1.2 You can do this by going to start->settings->network and dialup and double clicking on "Local Area Connection" choose Properties. A new window should open and show you all you network bindings. REMOVE everything except TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Print.... Double click TCP/IP and assign your own adress of 192.168.0.2 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Now, open a Command Prompt window and type "Ping 192.168.1.1" If you get no response, try rebooting. If you get a response, open Internet Explorer and type "http://192.168.1.1" This should open your Linksys configuration tool. I prefer NOT to use the DHCP if the computers are only going to talk to each other. In other words, if you don't randomly attch computers to your LAN or use your laptop as a mobile station. Even so, for now, just set up a static lan, your linksys manual will help you a little on this. If this is all set, it's time to work on the laptop. One final thing, you must have a user account setup for Win2K. Do this under the Control Canel->Users and Passwords. Make sure the user name and password on the laptop is listed on the Win2K box.
----Laptop
Setup your network in the similar fashion, except this adress should be 192.168.1.3 open a Command Prompt window and try to ping 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.2 with the command "Ping 192.168.0.x" (x=1 or 2) If this works, try pinging the name of your Tbird computer. You can find the name of your comp by right clicking My Computer and clicking the network tab. If all this works, you should be able to connect to each other through the Network Neighborhood. If you can't, Prvate Message me and I'll try to help some more.
As Always,
D

hey dougjnn

I have Win2K Working on a peer-to-peer with several other OSes such as 98 and ME. For some reason, Win2K does not like computer names. The Win2K machines need to access shared resources and not just computers. Instead of connecting to \\<computer_name> connect to \\<computer_name>\<shared_resource_name> and then provide the password without a username. Hit the forums back if this doesn't work.

I had that problem before between my Win2K and Win98 machine. It turned out that you need to choose "Use DHCP NetBIOS setting" in your Win2k advanced TCP/IP WINS property when you have a router. Without a router you need to choose "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" when you have NetBEUI protocol installed on Win9X machine. I have a LAN running right now with one Win2k and 4 Win9x machines. Every body sees every body just fine.
