W2K Problems

Not 100% sure when or what the circumstance were but all of a sudden I'm having problems with my Win 2000 Pro system. I?ll try to describe some to the symptoms.

- Microsoft Outlook Express no longer functions, I get these messages: ?The identity logon could not be started?, Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized.?. Had to install regular Outlook.

- Cannot run Control Panel ?Add / Remove Programs? when I double click, nothing happens.

- MS Internet Explorer v 6.0.2 periodically aborts, sometimes crashing my system (system reboots).

- When I try to update IE with newer ver, the message states, ?Can?t get a connection"?I am able to access the internet though. I?m not 100% sure but when tried to upgrade the 1st time and IE aborted which caused the system to crash?. this may have been around the time my problems started.

My last resort would be to reinstall W2K but I?m trying to avoid that?I?ll lose some programs that I wouldn?t be able to reinstall.

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

My system config:
Processor: AMD 1.4G
MB: EPOX EP-8K7A
HD: SCSI and IDA
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTS/GeForce 2 Pro
OS: W2K PRO - SP4 (Was on SP3 when problem started. Installed SP4 hoping it would help but it didn't)

Have you tried to run 'sfc /scannow'. Also, instead of a re-install of the OS, you can try the repair option when booting from the CD.

Check your system and application event logs which may give you some clues as to what?s happening.

Tried 'sfc /scannow' but no luck...actually this gave me another problem. Now I can't type anything in when in IE. When I try to key in, nothing happens. I able to type in any other place, Address line or in my Google tool bar, but trying to log into a site or replying to a forum does not work or anything else that has to do with keying data into a web page. I couldn't even reply to this forum over the weekend?had to wait until I got into work this morning.

Event log doesn't show much either, I?m only getting True Vector errors since I keep on turning Zone Alarm on and off..

If I can just get Control Panel?s ?Add/Remove? working I may be able to uninstall IE and then reinstall.

**Btw, punkemon1 and montemon ids are the same, I must have set up a different id for my work PC. Sorry for any confusion.

I agree that a repair (or "dirty") install may help. Sounds like the botched IE upgrade did some major damage.

I'm back up and running. Did a repair install from the W2K CD and everything is working fine now. Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions.
