W2K SP4: go or no go?

The best thing to do in that case is extract the files from the archive using the /x option. In the directory you extracted the files into go into /i386/update and run update.exe. This usually solves any strange installation problems.

I've just installed SP4 on one of my laptops with no problems (fresh Win2k install). I'll wait for a few days and see how it behaves, and then install it on my working (critical) machine.

One more thing, is it necesary to close every background app and remove USB peripherals before installing the SP? I have a USB CD burner, InCD, IIS, NAV, and Matrox QuickDesk running in the background. Should I disable them?

Another thing, what do I do with all the hotfixes previously installed? Should I uninstall them? Will they dissapear from "Add remove programs" after installing SP4?

I checked the svcpack.log file in the WinNT directory, which logs events of service pack installs. In my failed installations, it's recording an event, "DoInstallation:RunInfProcesses for ProcessesToRun Failed". Does anyone know what that means?

hmm which installer are you using?
The Web based one or the full download network install one?

I've been using the W2KSP4_EN.EXE full download Network install, on the machines I service and I havent run across a problem yet..

I have two newer machines running SP4 without any problems (shutdowns are actually FASTER than SP3).

I haven't attempted to upgrade my Thinkpad T21 (PIII-800) yet because SP4 includes hotfix 329170 which caused shutdown delays of 2 minutes on this machine which I did not care for...

I just installed it on a 440BX mobo and shutdown and boot are fine. Maybe a bit faster too.

I was using the express install for SP4. I downloaded the full network install package, and when I installed from it, all went fine. Strange. Oh well, whatever works...

But now I have bigger problems. The machine suddently won't even POST. I've swapped RAM, Power Supply, AGP video card, CPU, pulled all the PCI cards, cleared CMOS -- still toast. Lights come on but the screen stays blank. The HD's spin up but aren't accessed. The only thing left is the MB. This is an Abit KR7A-RAID, a KT-266A board -- of the vintage of when the faulty electrolytic capacitors were a big issue throughout Taiwan. :frown:

They fixed the shutting down for 5 minutes bug, thats reason enough to update for me
