w2k upgrade problem

dear all,
every time i upgrade my machine or any other machine from win98 SE to w2k pro i get an error message
each time i open an office document or an image file. i think something wrong with the installation i do
but can figure out what is exactly.
any way the error message is: "cannot find the file drive_letter:\folder\file.* (or one of its components). make sure the
path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available"
please advice

If you're upgrading to Windows 2000, make sure you're installing programs as the administrator or someone with administrative rights. What I've been doing is to install all programs under the local administrator (log on to the computer, not a domain). Make sure everything works...then create users. They'll still be able to access the programs and you won't have to reinstall for each user.

Other things to check: are the Windows 2000 and Office CDs messed up?

I know it?s a real pain, but you really should do a clean install when going from Win9x to Win2k. Some of the problems you?re having may be a result of having the Windows files in ?C:\WINNT? instead of the win9x?s ?C:\WINDOWS? folder.

i alaways do my work logging on as an administrator. i think the problem exceeds the user rights issue.
ive been consulting the Microsoft online support team, and it seems unsolvable.
clean install was my inly hope on this case.
