W2KS: various error messages in Event Viewer; I need some help deciphering WTH they mean.

Hi guys. I was going thru the messages in Event Viewer and I've got some questions.

1. RSVP gives a message "this host cannot be ACS since Active Directory has not been properly configured via the QoS ACS management console" WTH?

2. NETLOGON gives a message "dynamic registration or degregistration failed because a DNS server could not be found." (my server IS the DNS server for my network. I have DNS forwarded and get name resolution internally and externally)

3. RSVP gives a message "failed to find any devices with traffic flow enabled. Install QoS traffic flow via networking and dialup." WTH?

4. MSMQ gives a message "Messaging Queing was unable to join the Windows 2000 Domain." WTH?

Can you tell me what these mean and how to fix them? I dragged the HELP question mark to them and all it does is repeat the properties of the errors, described above.

I gotta purchase a Windows 2000 Server book!

I gotta purchase a Windows 2000 Server book!

Never a poor choice, but I would first look up any problem you are having on EventID.net Its free and 7 out of 10 times it will point me to a place I need to look to solve my problem. Also look through the Microsoft Knowledgebase.

My sneaking suspicion is that for some reason either DNS is set up incorrectly or having problems. If you do an nslookup, what do you get?

Holy crap!! I'm glad you replied. When I do an nslookup it says "cannot find server for 192.168.xxx.xxx...default servers aren't available."

I don't understand. My server IS doing DNS/DHCP for the network. The server has a name. I can ping the name of my server from any box on the network and I get the DNS resolution/reply.

What's going on here? How to fix?

THANKS!!!

ping on Windows will fall back on NetBIOS resolution, so if DNS isn't working it may still find the name via WINS or broadcasts.

Ok, a couple of things to look at here. I don't use QoS, but I don't mind trying anyways.

Regarding your original questions, by the numbers:

1) Sounds like you need to further configure active directory, but if NSLOOKUP isn't returning your domain information then active directory might have problems (more than likely it will because active directory leans heavily on DNS to do a lot of its functions). What I mean by further configure is that there may be some ACS configurations you have to do, which is what it sounds like the message is saying. Did I just confuse you? Oh well. Dig into your ACS setups a bit more.

2) This is probably the one you should tackle first. Get DNS wrong and the odds are good that other problems will pop up. What is your server's FQDN (fully qualified domain name)? You need to make sure that the domain name is domainsomething.local or you can fudge and do a .com or something. Doesn't matter, just make sure that .local or .com is in there. That alone can wreck the resolution.

3) When you right click on Network Neighborhood and choose properties it will show you your network adapters and dialup connections. What I THINK this is telling you is that the QoS agent could not be found or wasn't enabled for any NIC or dialup connection in your computer. I believe it is enabled by default so you would have had to turn it of manually. Right click on the connection and choose properties. Make sure you have a check mark in QoS Packet Scheduler (thats what my XP Pro says at least).

4) I wouldn't freak out about the message queing service. Work on DNS and I think Message Queing will fix itself.

Oh, and make sure you read this article...

Good morning and thanks very much for the replies. OK...lets' see here:

1. I right-clicked My Network Places and checked out properties. It shows my NIC, it's enabled and working fine. I have no dialup connections, as I don't RAS into this box. It also shows TCP/IP, Appletalk, Client for MS networks, Network Monitor and File&Print sharing. All are checked and seem to be fine. I don't see a check box for the QoS...wait a minute..maybe I can install it? BRB...

HEY, I installed a New Service...called QoS (I'm learning as I stumble...can you tell?) I guess a reboot is in order?

2. When I setup AD (I will look into it further, tonight) I named my FQDN as a .com (even though I don't really have a "REAL" domain by the name)
So, my server is servername.fakedomain.com

Thanks again guys; you are lifesavers!

Well, I rebooted and nslookup still returns null results.

In Event Viewer it shows DNS service started. it shows MSMQ started (fixes prob #4, in orig post).

I can't check out Active Directory, b/c it tells me "running AD wizard" will demote this server." I don't want to do that...I think. Any other ideas besides wipe and reload? <--hmm. Even if I did that, I probably wouldn't do anything differently...help.

Well, I fixed the nslookup problem.

#1. I had no pointer (ptr) enabled pointing to my server...I can't really explain further, b/c I really don't get it completely
#2. I had no reverse lookup zone enabled. This is supposed to be my server, obviously

So, nslookup now works correctly.

A PTR record is a "POINTER"

Check out this article by Microsoft on DNS. What you are looking for is about 1/4 of the way down the page. Do a ctrl+f for ptr twice and you should find it.
