I'm looking for a wagon but most seem plain or just an afterthought to a sedan version. I don't want a typical fullsized wagon and not a 5 door hatch like a matrix. The mazda 3 is nice and I love the style. It just needs about 12 inches on the rear, so it falls into that sub compact wagon class. Even if it is a little bit rough around the edges compaired with what I would like to drive.

Here is what I have found in limited fashion so far. V50 T5, Subaru Outback, Audi A4 wagon. I'd take a 3 series wagon in a heartbeat if such a beast could be found for 25K or better with under 40k miles on it.

I don't think I'd ever get another 4 door or coup if I had a good option for a wagon version. They are just too darn usefull. My last one was a V40 Volvo. It took the hit for me when some yahoo in a s10 pulled out in front of me.

Anyone else out there a wagon fan?

The new V50's are very sharp looking, as are the 9-3 SportCombi's from Saab. I'm also a sucker for the new Passat wagons with the sport package, but that's slightly getting bigger than you want.

You can't go wrong with a Legacy GT wagon either.

A lot of wagons/hatches look better than the sedans to me. I'm just a wagon/hatch guy though. My last couple cars were a VW GTI --> Passat Wagon --> Mazda 3 hatch.

Same here. I love wagons. I was looking for a Mazda6 or subaru wagon but ended up getting the Mazda6 hatchback.

Is 2006 A3 wagon big enough? You can get them around here for under $25K with less that 25K miles. All the car magazines that I read have given it good marks.

Thats a hatchback like the Matrix, not a true wagon.

A4 Avant is a wagon. The A3 is like a Golf.

Does it have to be new? If used, you got plenty of options. Does the outlook really fit into the sub-compact wagon class? You can get the subaru legacy wagons that ride a bit better and lower then the outbacks. The Saab 92-x was based off of the subaru impreza. You can probably find the 2007 impreza wagons still on some dealer's lots. If not, how do you feel about the new impreza wagons?

Mazda also makes the 6 in wagon and hatch form. The subaru forester is also based on the impreza platform but probably has more storage space.

EDIT: Screw the stigma. 23 years old and I would never buy another sedan again (unless I get rich and have several cars). My subaru legacy wagon makes me feel good whenever I get into it.

Heh.

A3 is neither wagon nor hatch but a "sportback"

It's not as small as a typical hatch but it's up to 12" shorter than a V50, Forrester, or Avant and up to 24" shorter than an XC70, Legacy, Passat, or Allroad.

To me, a trunk is waste of space... or rather the unenclosed space above it is. Better to have that space on the inside in case you ever need it (as well as the ability to fold down the rear seats).

I will have to look into the Saab 9-3 and the Mazda 6 wagon, I would really prefer to buy a used low mileage car to avoid a car payment and still keep some money in the bank. It really kills me to buy new unless I am absolutely in love with the car.

I got a Mazda 6 wagon a couple of years ago for a really good price (a year old, 20K miles, $11K). It *was* from a rental fleet, which I think is pretty common with 6's, but I never had any problems with it. We sold it a year ago because we decided to get a minivan instead - the 6 is not particularly roomy in the back seat for 3 kids. But I enjoyed driving it, it was much more fun than my current Maxima, though it's been a great car.

I've got the minivan thing down. This will be a personal commuter car. Thanks for the input on the Mazda. I'd like a fair bit of sport with the wagon and a balance of gas economy. My commute consists of about three stoplights a handful of stop signs and 35 minutes of curvy roads running through horse farms with little traffic.

The best thing about a wagon is the lack of interest it holds for most buyers. You can occasionally get a year old for about half price. I got a 94 diamante wagon, msrp 29.5, in 95 with 20k for 14.5. Look for a year old luxury wagon. Best way to get the bells and whistles with out getting hosed.
