My car is a ’04 S4 Avant. It gives up 80hp to the RS4, but otherwise close. Had it for almost 3 years, and I’m just looking for a change. I’ll probably put it on the market soon.

I will miss picking up my daughters in a car that can kick the s*** out almost all family cars.

I'm of the opinion that all wagons are hatchbacks, but not all hatchbacks are wagons. A wagon typically has a little more "junk in the trunk" where the back end hangs out over the back wheels more. A hatch typically is much more cut back after the C-Pillar.

How so? There are many older wagons that didn't exactly have a hatch, but a side-opening door in the back. These wagons though were typically of a much larger size than today's "wagons".

I should have made a disclaimer that anything made in the last 15'ish years fits that description.

I think a lot of people in the 20-40 age range remember their parents having one of these when they were kids:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7b/87-90_Chevrolet_Caprice_wagon.jpg

Which was about the most uncool thing you could be seen in. And so they have carried over that anti-wagon bias into their adult hood. Wagon? No way...those are lame.

Plus America in general has some aversion to the word "hatch". It's got a general association with the words "cheap" and "econo car".

lol we had one, we also had a volvo wagon, hell i drove a 240 wagon as recently as 3 years ago as my daily

i now have a saab wagon err hatchback cause people are bitching

My definition: 4 doors = wagon. 2 doors = hatch. There is grey area where the rear wheel is so close to the back as is the case with the 4 door golfs and minis.

<== loves his legacy wagon. Is sad he couldn't get it in turbo form + manual. Can compromise on the manual, but can't even get a turbo'ed legacy wagon from Subaru anymore.

Well a 4 door where the hatch starts at the C pillar is also called a hatchback (or fastback?)

I drive a sedan with fold-down rear seats for hauling long items, and pets sit on the back seat on trips to the vet. I have a truck for picking up large items.

I think wagons / hatchbacks are useful for their added versatility, but I personally can't stand their looks (I can't stand SUVs or crossovers either). For anything of "average" size, my Fusion does just fine. When I need to pick up something large, like the bed frame and mattress I bought two weekends ago, I have an F-150 at my disposal. Even with a wagon, we'd never have been able to fit the bed and mattress safely.

I think hatchbacks and today's wagon look better than a sedan. Look at a Prius hatchback compared to the sedan. I also prefer AWD to FWD/4WD when it comes to SUVs/Wagons to a truck or most sedans.

I hit the outdoors quite a bit and having a SUV makes things more convenient. 4 people, dogs are in the back, bikes on top and gear is in the roofbox.

In regards to space, I believe the Subaru outback has around 72 cubic feet of cargo capacity, don't know many sedans that can hold that much.

I'm planning on trading in my SUV in the near future. My new vehicle will either be a SUV or Cross-over/wagon.

I love my wagon.

I once put engine hoist, 2x long blocks, 2x tires, into a wagon. Try to do that with your sedan.

Wagons are like El Caminos, awful looking. It's like someone saying:

Customer: "Ummm, I want a car but I also want a pickup truck."
Salesman: "Hey, I have the perfect vehicle for you! It is a car-truck. It's called an El Camino."
Customer: "That is AWESOME!"

And yes, I'd consider those Subarus wagons. They are like mini-wagons, and they look goofy as hell.

instead of looking at it in terms of age, I see it more along political lines.

My sample set is rather small, being limited to the people I personally know why drive these two vehicle types, but what I've witnessed is:

Wagon=liberal
SUV=conservative

If they had enough money for an SUV and keep the gas tank filled, they wouldn't be libs now would they

I'm liberal and have been driving SUVs for 15 years. Now, I'm considering a wagon. I'm becoming more liberal?
