Beside high end graphics, I don't think that there is any software that really need anything faster then a 1.5 gig processor. I would just get the best bang for your buck now. Don't worry about the future except to get a mobo that can take a faster processor for when you want to upgrade in a year or so.

If you want northwood, see if Intel offers a 1.6 or 1.8 version in the us. There was an article on a Japanese website about those cpus. I wouldn't pay the $679 or so for the 2.2 version.

Unless you're overclocking greatly, what would be the reason for a 1.6 or 1.8 northwood when 1.6 Athlons exist?

Is it really necessary to turn every thread into a Intel vs AMD thread ?

The P4 and the Athlon each have good and bad points, the forum is full of threads about the differences.

Sorry. I can definitely see why someone would want 2.0GHz and up Northwoods, though.

I agree! I don't think it is an Intel/AMD debate, I just don't know why you would get a 1.6 or 1.8 Northwood. Even if you are going to overclock, the Northwood has so much headroom, it looks like your memory would give out before the CPU did at 1.6 or even 1.8GHz. I'd say the SLOWEST Northwood people should get is the 2.0A GHz chip. Sh!t, even at 2.0GHz I think it will surpass my memory's threshold. I'll probably need PC1066 to reach the 2.0A GHz P4's limit. I know, it's a tough life but someone's got to live it.

I have NEVER purchased an intel product. But, this could easily be my first. Someone in Japan had the 2.0A up to 3 GHz. WOW!!!! That's a nice overclock.

Intel 845 boards are now available with DDR. Lost Circuits had the ASUS version of this board up to 172 Mhz FSB in their review. If you can get a 1.6 or 1.8 version you could possibly run these at 150 FSB and hopefully reach 2.4 or 2.7 GHZ...a lot cheper than buying the real thing(2.0 or 2.2 version) and get the benefit of higher bandwidth from the higher FSB.
