Wait for socket 2011?

2 years and a few months ago.. I built a computer with the socket 1366 . I am kind of disappointed that I did not go with the 1155 because the processors are simply better it seems.

So my question is....

what comes after 1155 for the intel sockets?
I heard 2011 is replacing 1366 but I am not sure I want to go that route again because I don't really have many options for upgrading my CPU. To upgrade my CPU I would have to spend 600 dollars and it wouldn't even be that much of an upgrade from an I7 920

I'm in the same boat, BD was a flop.. and Asus doesn't have a Gen3 version of the Extreme-Z out, so I'm contemplating just waiting for x79. :/

But I've read rumours it's been delayed, and I don't want to miss SKYRIM, TOR, BF3 season.

2 and a bit years ago the socket was 1156, not 1155. 1155 is about 18 months old (at a guess). The CPUs at that time were a little slower than the 1366.

after 1155? no idea, still about 18 months off.

As to socket 2011, it will be the same story in that a upgrade from the lowest cpu will be about $600 as well (intel likes sticking to it's price points).

As what to do, you can upgrade to a 1155 cpu (2500K or 2600K depending on what you want), or you can wait for the next update which is Ivy Bridge (still socket 1155) and get a little more performance at the same power level / heat generation. Expected release date for Ivy Bridge IIRC is about March next year.

...I'll just tell you my story.

Had a 775 processor (Q6600) for the longest time. Around the time it and it's motherboard died, S1156 was fairly new and DDR3 was expensive. I bought another S775 motherboard and a Q9550 (I think it's a 9550...2.8GHz stock speed) so i could reuse my DDR2 memory and save about $300 b/c I wouldn't have to buy DDR3.

That was about 18 months ago. Since then, Sandy Bridge has come out and the performance just spanks the S775-era processors...(and overclocks awesomely assuming you get a "K" series w/the unlocked multiplier). DDR3 memory has dropped in price by about 300%. I just bought 8GB of the stuff for $42 after MIR...how much cheaper do you want?

So, yesterday in fact, I felt it was time to upgrade. I think my 470GTX GPU has a little more juice in it if the rest of the system can keep up with it. So, I just went with a P67-based motherboard and a 2500K-i5 CPU. They seem to hit 4GHz with absolutely zero effort and higher if you really want to tinker. Even w/no overclock, a 3.3GHz SandyBridge handily spanks a 2.8GHz last-gen CPU (can't remember the family name).

I know Ivy Bridge is coming out next year. And of course it'll be pricey at first. IB will be S1155 and most P67 and Z68 motherboards can already use it. The ASrock P67 board I bought can already use IvyBridge with it's shipping BIOS...so I'm good for the future as well.

I chose not to wait, as I've waited long enough, IMO. Heck, I just got a SSD a month ago.

Good luck.

Similar story
Comparing the i7920 and q9550 and I chose to go with the q9550 since the cost of 1156 boards at the time was insane.
The only difference is that while SB has really pushed the envelope, my old q9550 has still handles everything with ease (its paired with a gtx570).
No need to upgrade yet.
I do have an i3 SB based htpc and have spent plenty of time on SB i7 based rigs. I'm still able to max out games on my q9550 rig so until something fails on it...no need to chase benchmarks for me.
If there was an app I ran that proved my CPU to be a bottleneck then I'd probably get the i7-2600k and another z68 board.
If I found a game that really stressed out my system I'd check to see if the GPU is holding me back before doing a full upgrade.

pauldon170: A better (substantially better, not just "50 3DMarks better) GPU than my 470GTX costs almost $500. My new CPU/MB/CPU HSFAN/memory was $456.57, shipped.

I thought about a new GPU vs. a new subsystem and came to the conclusion that the money spent (which I didn't really NEED to do) was better off being put into a whole new subsystem vs just a GPU. Additionally, the new 7000-series AMD cards are supposed to be something special and will be out in a few months. New GPUs that really improve things happen roughly every year. CPUs, not too often, really. I.E. the "Q series" Intel CPUs are still highly relevant today.

I will keep the new rig for at least 3 years. Will probably buy a new GPU in the spring once the "new stuff" hype dies down and the initial price gouging is over.

Also, the SandyBridge/P67 combo runs cooler/uses less juice than the Yorkfield/whatever series board (Asus P5 Plus Turbo) than I'm currently using. I"ll probably save a whopping $2 per month in electricity, but hey it's a buck!

In your case..a new system whether its 1155 based or 2011 would probably work out well.
I was reminiscing a bit back when I was making the jump from a 939 based AMD system to a new a rig, facing a choice between a 775 or just released 1366 and ended up babbling a bit.

To answer your question...
The socket 2011 is supposed to be the high end chipset paired together with 130 W parts (though paired with the tri gate stuff who knows what will be typical)
I would lean towards the 1155 mainstream parts unless there is a significant increase in performance for th eprice

News that I read recently showed that IB will only be 5% to 6% more "over-clockable" than SB. And since they'll make a socket-1155 flavor of IB, I'm happy with my decision not to wait.
