Actually, I can see one of the advantages here: previously, people misspelled band names, movie names, activities, etc. on their profiles. Now, these items are tagged and consistently spelled, so it's easier to search for people who like the same things as you (if you were so inclined).

Although I guess now I can't write things like "anything but Country music" or "Rap blows" LOL.

I was already on the school and employer networks before so if I deselected those, I probably wouldn't be able to view certain people's profiles, or sections of their profiles. FB had this information previously, so it's not a major change.

If you edit your profile, you will get the popup. If you choose not to link to any and then hit save, all your interests/favorite TV shows/movies/books/etc will be removed from your profile. The best you can do is just back out. Ridiculous.
I thought it was fucking retarded too, but I guess it is a better way of organizing users' interests. It basically is the same as it was, except now there's pages for each item (or the ability to create one) and users can connect easier since it automatically organizes items together even if the spelling variations are different.

Wow.....I just logged on and it tried to force me to be a fan of like 50 different pages. When I unselected it, I was told that it would erase my education & work info if I didn't select fan pages for the school & organization I worked at. Seriously guys?

With 'Chicago' originally listed under 'Hometown', facebook now wants to require 'chicago' to be hotlinked to the "Chicago, Illinois" page. Hotlinking to this page will automatically make the link public as well.

However if you don't want to be linked to this page or any other and want your information private, and you try to uncheck it from being linked, facebook will then threaten to delete your posted info from other areas as well.

Facebook extortion ftw.

Wow. I opened this thread, looked a few of the replies, and then said to myself "no way..". I go back to facebook for a minute, and POP! That fucker popped right up, telling me to favorite 90 different goddamn things. I just said "edit them individually", and then navigated away from the page by reloading facebook.com in the URL bar. It whined to me about not "saving my connections" but I just clicked continue.. Now it has this annoying "The things you care about will now link to actual Pages" on my info page. How do I remove this bullshit and never see it mentioned again??!

I was just on facebook not 10 minutes ago. Goddamn they're getting annoying.

Edit: SO YEAH, my fucking profile is all a bunch of hotlinks now. Guess I'm going to delete everything, but not before copying it all into my "about me" section.

Disadvantage: I'm pretty sure that the owners of all the pages to which you are linked have access to all the personal info in your Facebook account.

I don't think so. I checked the Privacy settings pages, and I can still control whether friends, networks or only I can see my phone number, email addresses, etc.

So unless I'm friends with the creators of those pages (I'm not), they wouldn't see my info unless they hacked into Facebook's servers.

I removed all my school info, work, whatnot. I don't use Facebook to catch up to my work and douchebags from school. I know enough douchebags

I just unchecked everything except the book "Curious George." That is my only interest according to Facebook.

Facebook is trying to jump the shark early.. I would've given them another 5 years.. But with this stupid annoying change, I think it's two years or less before Facebook becomes the next Myspace.

If that's really what you think, you can't read.

I understand their reasoning behind the change and don't mind it. You guys really think they want to "force" you to become a fan of things? Get a grip.
