OK, my bad. It was another server who told the family. Where did he get his info? Must have been from the first server who was "spreading it around".

it is not often a waiter or management sends somebody away. It would be just about impossible for the rest of the staff to not know about it.

And as for the right to refuse service, that is almost universally reserved for management, not wait staff. Management might have handled the whole thing better.

This 100%

I did fine dining for many years when I was younger. For those who remember Chuck Muer, the waiter/server would have been out of a job by the time the dessert was served and the meal was comped had he worked for him or any of the bosses I worked for over the years... You don't make those kinds of decisions no matter how noble it is/isn't unless you have been instructed to by someone above you. Then it's their problem.

Likely all that anyone else knew is that a family left. That is until the original guy discussed it with other wait staff and wondered if he might get fired.

Have you ever worked in a restaurant? Skyking is correct, refusing service doesn't go unnoticed. If they patron wanted to eat there, maybe he should keep his unnecessary crass comments to himself.

This is ridiculous, it's a free country. If you go into a restaurant and there is a kid with syndrome x drooling in a bowl then ask to be moved else ware or leave. If you make a rude comment cool, don't be a bitch when you are refused service or kicked out. If management gets mad then fire the waiter.

If it was me I would have politely sat his ass across the restaurant and promptly spit in his food or worse, fuck that ass hole. Or better I would have said "sir your kids are ugly as hell and smell like cat piss, I'm going to have to ask you to get them out of here people are trying to eat FFS"

The thing that irritates me about this most is that it's news. I mean, really, are we such fearful, awful people that when somebody stands up for what's right in such a small capacity that there is a news article that gains such traction? I am hoping to make local news for letting some mom and her kid in front of me at the grocer the other day because they were only carrying two items and I had 20.

I had thought of posting this article before OP did for the reason I just mention, after seeing it on a UK paper. Being a grown adult and making fun of a disabled kid in their general presence is incredibly stupid, but I thought we all inherently knew it.

It's some good news, for a change.. which is entirely the point of making the thread in the first place.

So, making an insensitive remark is a punishable offense in that place, even if it doesn't effect other patrons?

I don't see it as the server's job to judge and punish people for their views when it is not disruptive to others. It doesn't seem that the guy even used any crude terms in reference to the kid.

I'm not defending what the guy said, but I think the server was out of line.

when its your restaurant you can create whatever policies you see fit.

This isn't fine dining, it's a family place. Besides, I don't determine right or wrong based on a workplace rule. People who stand up for what is right despite the consequences are even more noble.

Well, it wasn't the server's joint either. There was no policy that he knew of as evidenced by his fear that he might be fired. I fail to see your point.
