If that were to ever happen to me (i have had bad servers but haven't had the pleasure of meething these folks)

1) I'd start laughing

2) call the manager over, and have her explain to him why the 15% I left was unacceptable.

Some basic embarrassment.

the hell? 15% is enough.

if she gave bad service (no pun intended) and it was slow to begin with, then she should be damned lucky.

I always tip the Pizza Guy 20%. Might seem like a lot, but I've got a reputation now. Pizza deliveries average less than 30 minutes for me. And once they had a new lady who messed up my address, so they doubled my order even though they still got it to me in about 45 minutes (the "old" order was still warm).

Agreed. When he said "My tab comes out to $46 or so and i leave a $7 tip", somehow I came under the impression that the OP spent a minute or two with a calculator, trying to make up numbers. And, I've never seen or heard of someone who cut their lip on a chipped glass.
Of course, his post count seems to give him some forum credibility; but I still doubt the story is as he told it.

One other thing, OP, could you make a decision on which tense you're going to use while telling a story? "I throw a business card in her direction and tell her to take it up with the law firm I was for and advise her to go back inside and make earn her $7.50/hr." Are you an errand boy for the law firm? Did you type that after too many drinks at the bar? I *shudder* agree with dmcowen.. "corporate thug" fits.

I'm gonna go ahead and call shen on this one too.
He either made it up or exaggerated the story quite a bit.

1) I work in the service industry and noone I have ever worked with confronted a customer on a tip......(easiest way to lose your job)....although I do see this type of behavoirs happenning.
2) what makes it even more unbelievable is that you so called gave her 15%+ and your friend gave her a 20%+ tips. Anyone in the service industry that would confront customers on 15% and 20% tips should be locked in the asylum.

So go ahead and prove us wrong.
Show us the receipt showing $53.xx on it.
And don't say you don't have it because you paid it with a CC and you can pulled those up very easily.

hah, I tip waitresses 10% tip, unless they are really good. But usually it's 10%. Why, because I think 10% coming off a my payroll, would really piss me off, therefore, 10% is a lot. Would anybody else like to get charged 10% taxes on everything. That's what I though. If the waitress is amazing and everything is near perfect, I'll give 15%, maybe even 20%. However, if I felt like I could've done a better job getting the things I needed myself, then a lowly 5% is what's coming their way.

If you were seriously unhappy with the service, you could've said something to her when you paid, politely of course. You aren't required to do so, but some people would appreciate knowing if they messed up and didn't realize it.

As far as her having the nuts to come out and tell you she isn't "happy" with the tip, screw her. There's no law even requiring you to tip, it's based entirely on the level of service. If she got a sub-standard tip (of which 15% is not) then she should've clued in that her service sucked.

If it were me, and she came back with my ccard receipt and that little comment, I would've asked to see the manager, and told him/her that I wanted to change my tip to $0, and that the next time I came in I'd be asking for a more polite and competent server.

While we're not GREAT tippers, we do tip relatively well for good service. When we walk into a restaurant, we expect to tip 15%. That may get adjusted up or down, depending on a variety of factors. Quality of service, speed of server, quality of food, (yes, I hold the server responsible for kitchen screw-ups) etc. NORMALLY, we end up tipping between 15-25%, but there have been a couple of times where we left a mere 2 cents on the table to make a point. Never leave just no tip, that can be misconstrued as "they forgot", or just don't believe in tipping. Leaving 2 pennies makes the point that you were VERY unhappy with the service received.
We had a waitress follow us into the parking lot in a mountain resort town one time to complain about the tip. We had left (almost to the penny) 15%, and she didn't think that was sufficient. I asked her to show me how much I had left, and when she held it out, I counted it, and apologized profusely...and stuck it in my pocket. I think she expected me to take out more, but instead, I told her that tipping is not the law, but a gratuity for good service, and she only provided mediocre service. I thought she was doing good to get the 15%, but if that wasn't good enough, I'd just keep it...then, I walked back in and told her manager what had happened. Handed him the tip to spread amongst the bus staff, since they did much of her work anyway. (getting/refilling water glasses, napkins, etc.) He fired her on the spot. Apparently, it wasn't the first time she had done this...

the glass was chipped, the order was screwed, and the service was slow, so you gave her 15%... Jeezus, you deserve what you got

I would give her ZERO. ZILCH. NADA

I am tired of all the whining i get from ppl making min wage... there is a good reason they make minimum wage.

This whole thing sounds like a misunderstanding. But neither you or the waitress were mature enough to handle it.

The most obvious conclusion is that she thought his tip was for the entire table, opposed to just his bill. Perhaps she hadn't seen the $8 tip left by his buddy yet. Or perhaps his "group of friends" left seperate tips or just stiffed her.

What waitress complains about a 15% tip? That's the standard.

I guess it depends. I tip 15-20% on food based on the service and add $1 per drink ordered. Gotta look at it as two separate checks but that's how I do it.

15% was a good tip esp considering she messed up the orders. Personally, i would have left a 10-12% tip for mix ups.

you were right, she was wrong.

Regardless of whether the OP was being a dick or not... the waitress still didn't deserve a tip; in fact if it was possible I would have billed HER for being a bitch. Think of it as a negative tip... when even zero tip is too much!

Generally I tip liberally but I'm also quick to leave nothing for poor service. Horrible service earns a penny, usually left in the bottom of a drink glass. Average service gets 15-20% and great service gets about 30. At bars I always tip more because.... ah hell, I don't know why I just do.

That's called not paying for the bill, which can be a perfectly acceptable solution if the situation warrants it. If the service was seriously that bad, talk with a manager, and inform him that you have no intention of paying when you were treated so badly.

I 99% agree with the OP (omitting the $7.50hr comment.)

She was so far out of line she could have been fired for accosting a customer for a 15% tip.

If the story is true, which some of it seems unlikely. But if that really happened to you, then wow, that bitch needs a slap. But I don't see how that can all be accurate, no waiter would chase down a customer over a 15% tip, even if the service was good. Now if she was THAT bad, she knows it and theres now way she would chase you down, she would be happy with what she got. If that happened to me though, i would get my tip back, get fer fired, then hand her a penny.

I belive it. when many waiters/waitresss think you should START at %25 then work your way up. i can see one getting pissy on a 15% tip.

Yeah, I question the lawyer bit now. What kind of lawyer would have see their friend cut his lip on a bar glass and not try to sue for big $$$?

A chipped bar glass is not much sharper then a piece of hard candy. You would need to drag your lip over the chip back and forth with force to draw any blood. I find this part of the story shens.

Still waiting for the "well, I exaggerated that part" which will be followed by "well, I exaggerated the amount of the tip too" followed by "I exaggerated the reaction of the waitress."

bingo. followed by "I exaggerated about being gainfully employed"
