I can't read the whole thread, but how big was the group? 1-2 people 7 bucks ok. Three or more I would have left at least $10. The more people in the group the more the tip should be.

Also who says she makes $7.50 an hour. She could make like $4 an hour and then she still has to split her tips with like the bartender and hostess etc etc.

WTF... ~16% on your bill is cheap... did you flunk your elementary school math or are you one of those waiters with a false sense of entitlement....

I'm not sure if he out of elementary school yet...

You're not sure if he out of elementary school huh?

So how much to retain your clearly awesome skills?

Depends on the nature of the work.

So how much do your jon's pay you for a bj?

lol, here you are berating him for being on the same level as the waitress for what he said, yet you make comments like this?

Why are you people still talking about this like it actually happenned ???
Until the OP show us the receipt, he probably made up or exaggerated the story.
He hasn't replied since we called shennigan on him.

No server is going to confront the customers on 15% and 20% tips.

My 2 cents

Thank you sir

Question since I have never been off this rock:

Do wait staff get paid by the hour the same as any other job or do they rely solely on the money from Tips over there?

I think you wre generous. For me, waiters start out with earning 15% as soon as I sit down. If they do a great job, then the amount starts to go up. If they do a poor job, then it starts to go down.

Probably because so many people in here show distain for wait staff.

And why should they? Any server with a half a brain knows that it isn't going to make the situation better.

Maybe she wanted your number and just didn't know how to approach you, so she acted physco.

Here are some of the evidence that I've observed in your story:

Waitress: sparked a conversation telling you theres not enough tip.
Waitress: demanded for more money
Waitress: Notice you leaving
Waitress: Chases after you
Waitress: demanded some more
You: gave her your business card
Waitress: Wins!

In Kahleeforneeya, wait staff get AT LEAST the state minimum wage, ($6.75) plus their tips.None of that $2.13/hr crap here. And yet, they STILL bitch about tips...

While I know waiting tables can be a difficult job, and they have to put up with a lot of often unpleasant people, seriously, if the money isn't good enough, change jobs...

Plus I am hoping he realizes he just spoke for the entire law firm with that remark.

That puts his 'slander' in a different light. Unless she made exactly $7.50 / hr, and even then...

With the poor english in the OP's post, I really doubt the extent of his legal career.

I've dealt with several upset waitresses and waiters over the time in my life. Usually because they had a bad day or their personal life is going south. However, I never had one comment on a tip or lack of tip (for bad service) or even had one chase me to the parking lot to tell me about it. I doubt the whole situation happened or at the very least you left out important parts. Also the elitist attitude insulting her wage further proves my point.

well... in san francisco i think the "norm" is more like 20%, and i regularly leave more than that depending on the restaurant and service. for drinks the norm is $1-2 per drink, so $7 does seem a little low. i figure a few extra bucks doesn't matter to me, but it might matter to the persons serving my food.

Okay, get ready for this, cause its gonna be a shocker. Europe, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, Waiter/ess's get paid by the hour a min wage. They also get depending on speed of service, friendiness and generous nature of the customer, a tip, from maybe $5 to 10-15% of bill. BUT, its a tip only, the customers way of saying, why thenk-you for great service (they might actually say to the waiter person, thank-you so much for a great meal, please share this with the chief for excellent food)...

The tipping system as a form of top up wages doesnt work, because it turns a gratitude into an obligation where you are judge and jury of someones work performance and that is not only the responsiblilty of the waiter..

Yes I have, but long time ago....Actually, I think I have been to places where they try that on, & I naturally took the tip off. My bill is for the price on the menu thank-you very much, my tip is MY discretion....

i tip but its totally a subjective thing based on some objectiveness like service quality of food etc. For example i was at my local microbrew/bbq house in town, tab came to $23 for two beers, a drink for my buddy and a 1/2 hamburger. I tipped $10 b/c first the dude there knew me from HS and bought my my third beer, and i really liked the service that evening.

I'm LUCKY to get a $7 tip if somebody orders $46 worth of pizza. I would have told her manager and made sure she got fired.

I always show up late to these multipage topics...

You tipped her 15%. What more did she want? You were at a BAR, not the Trattoria Dopo Teatro. I would have spoken with the manager and made sure she didn't get a tip at all.
