wake on lan doesn't work

i can't get it to work on any off my two machines.

-3com 3c905 NIC's
-both motherboards support it (MSI 6163 pro_win2000 - intel VC820_win98se)
-i've set it to enabled at bios setup on both machines
-i've used AMD's magic packet software and intel's Landesk manager software to test.

none of the to machines boot up when a magic packet is sended to them.

any info would be great

My MB provides options such as WOL HIGH and WOL LOW. That means that a WOL signal could be generated either with a high voltage or low one (ground?!). You might try with different settings. But I have to admit that I have never tried myself.

I have WOL and I enabled it and everything. What does this do exactly and how do I use it?

Your power suply must be able to handle 720mA on the +5V stand by (5Vsb)

Most cheap P/S can only do .2A on 5VSB, and some P/S say the do .8A, but still wont work.

Only use 1A or higher P/S if you want it to be reliable.

Other things to check are the Mac address of the NIC in the PC you want to wake up.

PS, you do have the little wire connected from the NIC to the mobo dont you?

And as I understand if you physically turn off the computer it can't be waken up.

it should be the power supply on both machines 'cause i'did setup everything rigth and it still doesn't work.

I only have done this with lynksis cards so if the other manufacterers have different setups then obviously this does not apply. My card (lynkisis etherfast 10/100) supports magic packet and link change. You will have to know the MAC address of your card that you want to turn on. All of the WOL cards have diagnostic programs that will allow you to find this information out if you do not have it. For my lynksis, they gave me a program that will test the card in my pc being currently used. Then there is an option to send an ACPI packet. Then the program asks for the MAC adress and there you go... Though honestly, after playing around with this, I see this as a useless function for a home lan. I turn off the switch to move it or something, the WOL senses a change in the network connection and it boots. I need to take about two min to run the needed programs, when it takes about a min to physically walk to my other box. Anyway,s I am getting off topic now so hope this helps....
