Wal-mart Clearance $20 Hardware PCI modem or $5 pci winmodem

Just went on clearance 07/07/01...
Actiontec 56K internal PCI Call Waiting modem for $20. Was $69.96...

SKU Code on the receipt is 078928680225.. $20 for a hardware modem is cheap.. Since it is a Hardware modem, this modem will work with LINUX(seyz so on the box)... It also said "$50 off" if you decided to sign up with Earthlink $19.95 per month for 3 month... Free Earthlink for 3month?

Also, I saw winmodem on clearance for $5. Unfortunately for me, it's sold out so i don't really know what the sku is... Good Luck!!!

if it's the same actiontech win modem that i have... it says works in win 2000, it doesnt. got it at CC, where they have the 15% openbox thing (i dont even have the box anymore)

Its a hardware modem. Not a winmodem. It works fine under 2K and Linux.

dude you lucky--that win modem is still $32 and the hardware is still $40--at the stores that still have them (hm that is--they got oodles of the wins ) i got my hm for $30 some weeks ago

I found some drivers that made my pctel 789A chipset work in win2K HERE. If actiontec is using that chipset I would try them out. This one worked for me. Hope it helps. I actually like this cheap modem!!!

I have an ActionTec 56KB Winmodem that I bought at CC during a free after rebate promotion and it works fine with Win2K. In fact, the reason I bought it was that my old Robotics hardware modem would not work with Win2K and 3COM said they had no plans to publish drivers for it. I don't use the modem much but I wanted something on that machine so I took advantage of the promotion and I'm glad I did.

i cannot get mine to work wierd. the drivers install, and i tried every PCI slot, just ends up with an ! everytime. But if you got yours to work, i'll keep trying. thanks.

Lucent winmodems work fine under both win2000 and linux. So basically just because something works with those operating systems does not mean it is not a software modem.

Box also seyz "Intelligent Processor Onboard to Maximize Throughput"... Onboard processor = hardware modem.. Since it have it's own cpu, it's faster and doesn't use as much computer cpu time as a winmodem..

I stopped at Wal Mart this morning. There were 3 on the shelf marked down from 69.99 to 40.00
so I asked if there were going to be more markdowns because my 'friend' in Florida paid 20. He checked and came back & said 20 was okay.
After work I step up from a Win modem !

Just because it is a hardware modem doesn't automatically mean it support Linux. You have to make sure that it can be seen as a com port, which most ISA hardware modem does.

If it is a PCI one, it might require software to do so and therefore it might not support Linux (but it could be if the manufacture is nice)

mr. PandaBear, i went and got the box out of the file cabinet--it's says on the PURPLE box in YELLOW higlighted letters LINUX.

and another thing, almost everybody here keeps saying they are calling these stores--any true, target, kmart vet will tell you that calling is hit and miss. these stores have HUGE employee turnover (itaa) what if that person you talked to on the phone started after all of them were clearanced? or perish the thought(sarcasm) didn't know anything to begin with(modem? is that some new game for playstation?) by now i am finding the remaining ones hidden anyway, by either employees or broke hot dealers. you might actually have to leave your house this time to get this deal...

Careful what you assume . I have a V92 that says processor onboard, but it's not a hardware modem. It says specifically DSP on board I believe. It has the same 'stall your computer whie connecting' crap that my older winmodem has.

Installed my $20 hardware modem last night, &amp; didn't have any problems , that was unusual.

The connection speeds were down from my winmodem though. I went to Actiontec site &amp; down loaded a firmware update. After that connection speeds were higher that winmodem. Not really a scentific test I know but it seems to have helped.

Pages do seem to load faster.

If they have it for $30 ask about future reductions, it worked for me.
