Very nice all things considered.
The 1600+ is a little low by todays standards, but it does have Gigabit ethernet.

However, one looking at extra RAM cost etc. I think i'd go for teh 2800+ system
with DVD burner, 512 MB and 11.g for $998 if I didn't need to be too cheap.

Sending a kid off to school with this one isn't too bad.

It has been a while since I looked at this notebook, but as I recall the extended warranty is so inexpensive it can make the deal great.

I'll bet you love it when there are 3 rebates totalling $450? Right?

Aren't ECS Chinese made? I imagine a lot of laptops and components are also made in China, but ECS is a Chinese company right? If so, steer clear imo...

I got a call for some computer repair the other day by a Chinese man visiting the U.S. I asked him what brand and he replied with a giggle, it is a Chinese brand and then said that was the problem.. Even the Chinese know their electronics suck...

It may take many years to get better, but right now their stuff suckz..

Some Chinese electronics are pretty decent. I lived there for a few years and was fairly impressed by the higher level stuff. It's only now starting to make it over here - and even then it's usually the cheaper models.

ECS is indeed made in China, and isn't a name I normally associated with quality. Then again, I'll wager this laptop is probably rebadged and sold elsewhere, too. I doubt it's much worse than Dell. And no rebates = nice. Buy it with a credit card that extends the warranty. The problem I have with it is that it has 128MB of RAM. That won't really even run Win XP. So, factor in another $100 for more RAM into that price.

40 minutes... thats horrid. and ecs. its worth a risk on a m/b, a single component that can fail if ur a cheap geek. but a whole laptop? fixing laptops isn't fun. go with quality/peace of mind/support for just a little more. smells penny wise pound foolish

I went back to check the warranty and it is only $40 for 3 years. Sounds like better coverage than any that length I have seen since it covers normal wear and tear, power spikes, and environmental damage. Also no lemon so if repaired 4 times replaced or refund.

As to being made in China, If I recall, so is my Dell.

Recall that there aren't a tenth as many laptop manufacturers as there are laptop distributors. They all just slap their own name on them. I bought mine from a manufacturer in Taiwan and paid $400 less than if I would have gone through the "normal" channels. There is a happy midway for people who want the warranty action of the distributor. Warranty seems like, perhaps, an area that Wal-mart might excel at (guessing here though, based upon in store returns and such).

Those battery times, though... that's pretty awful. It's a mobile microdesktop. Just enough battery life for you to move it across the room and plug it in again.

Just incase everyone here didn't already know...

PRACTICALLY ALL COMPUTER ELECTRONICS ARE CHINESE MADE

Especially motherboards, videocards, soundcards, ethernet cards, modems, keyboards, mice (sometimes mexico) and batteries. Although battery cells are usually imported from Japan, often Sanyo or Panasonic, they're assembled in China.

Jezz, if there the language barrier was any better than it is between the USA and India, we'd probably have tech support outsourced to China too because they're just as capable if not more capable than India at providing support.

China doesn't equal crap. Remember 50 years ago Japanese products equaled crap too, then the 80's roll around and everyone freaks thinkin they're ganna control the world in the coming years (ala BladeRunner)

I can attest to that. When my son's Dell 300m arrived a few months ago, the shipping carton clearly indicated "computer made in China".

I just ordered the new upgraded AMD +1800 w/256 ram and double the battery cells (8) for my niece for $100 more. We'll see how good this is, but the price is right and it is Wal-Mart and that's quality compared to the crappy stores like Best Buy, CompUSA, Sears and Circuit City.

Wal-Mart

For $700 I could have got the absolutely horrible Dell, heavyweight HP or some disgusting BB lappy.

Oh, as for China made when my IBM (quality??!!?) died they sent me a replacement from....

Never thought I'd hear "wal-mart" and "quality" in the same sentence.
I believe the word you were looking for is "cheap."
