Are these the homeless guys your talking about?

The suit alleges that St. Louis police officers have routinely arrested the homeless without any suspicion they have committed crimes, have thrown fireworks at them to get them to move from a public park, have taken the homeless to remote areas and dumped them, have taken their food, medication, driver's licenses and insurance cards, have made them engage in forced labor prior to ever seeing a judge, and have generally attempted to remove the homeless from downtown, particularly before major events.

Maybe the next time you walk by them homeless guys, write this addy on a piece of paper and drop it in their can

Actually there are currently about 3 million homeless people in America, and 35 million who are 'food insecure' (defined as having to choose between food and another necessity, or receiving food assistance). While far fewer actually 'starve', malnutrition is affecting an estimated 11.5 million.

So to answer your question, yes, there are a HELL of a lot more than 25,000 people starving in America right now.
Which orifice did you pull those numbers from? Not much for actually providing sources, huh? I guess it's easier that way - no one can question what you stated and just have to take you at your word.

Explain why my city, population of 50,000, has a continual (rotating daily) population of about 30 - 45 people checked into the local homeless shelter. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist. And that is just daily homeless numbers that checked in, not including those who have a home / apt, but are underemployed, or those who are newly unemployed.
It may not be a good indication of the current situation, but it is part of the total equation.
There are homeless people here in St. Louis that eat better than I do. I see them every time I go down to the loop, sitting around in their nice leather jackets asking me for money when I'm wearing a rag from the early 90's. The homeless people in Columbia, MO recently got rounded up and arrested because they were pulling in over $35k/year each and weren't paying taxes. Homeless != starving.

Being underemployed is also a far cry from starving. I live well below the poverty line right now and I am eating pretty well, can pay for gas for my car, internet connection, rent, utilities, and still afford my girlfriend (who has woefully expensive tastes ). Point is that 'starving' is a choice in this country. There is always food if you're willing to swallow your pride and ask for it, and this is very rarely a necessity. I have taken food to people who needed it for the last 15 years or so - people down on their luck and couldn't make ends meet at the end of the month. Even these people who do break down and ask for help usually have a newish car (newer than mine anyway), cable TV, and other luxuries that indicate to me that they're far from legitimate starvation.

Do you have a link to that homeless story in Columbia, MO? I live in Columbia and haven't heard about that.

I know there are a lot of homeless people in Columbia, but it used to be worse when we had our 5 cent can and bottle deposit law.

In today's news, the number of homeless in St. Louis has doubled in the last year alone. " Everybody's trying to get in on the act" Willy Jones said from his cardboard box located behind the Wendy's on Broad ST. " It's getting to be you have to have at least 4, 5 years of homelessness on your resume before you can land a decent spot" he went on to say. Eugine Tropps Jr, spokesman for Homeless Inc. was all smiles today at the press conference. "It's great everyone wants to be homeless, but it sad we don't have the alley space for everyone"
" I'm looking forward to an even better year in 2006, with the new Hoovertown opening soon in the southend, on the other side of the tracks"

Only a spoiled white kid would say the homeless have it well. More points for the moral majority that claims to follow Christ while ignoring his message completely. Damn those spoiled homeless in their nice leather jackets and hot three course meals.

The problem is that many here associate the con men who panhandle and then drive off in their nice cars, have their leather jackets, etc. with REAL homeless people. Similar to the way that they associate everyone on welfare as gamblers, etc. Stereotyping at it's finest.

?That incredible number of applications shows the community is desperate and thinks Wal-Mart is a place to work to avoid starving,?

Fixed.

I don't know if it's such a good indication of anything. For all I know, this could indicate that there are 25'000 hungry people with nowhere else to turn for money, in order to survive.
Do you really think there are 25,000 people starving in the entire US right now? Which orifice of your body did you pull that one from? When did the left on this forum turn into the group of drama queens that posted in this thread?

Take a moment and tell me why the president's job is to get YOU a job. The president's job is, as the chief of the executive branch, to enforce the law, not find/create you a job. More generally, the government is NOT responsible for finding/creating you a job.
Ask your president if he thinks its his job to lower unemployment rates and take people off of government assistance and into independence. That is all I am saying.

No his job isn't human resources for McDonalds but for christ sake to say that it isn't the Presidents job to address these social concerns is dumb and you are dense dude.

No, not at all. You couldn't be more wrong. It's actually a clear indication of the failure of our education system.

Yeah, so if everyone had a college degree, there'd be no more unemployment?

Well see the point is to have OPTIONS...without a degree, or hell even a HS diploma you limit those options and therefore have boxed yourself into a corner....don't be so short sighted.
