Wal-Mart offering free shipping to local stores for orders placed online

Retailing giant Wal-Mart Stores has announced that they are now offering free shipping on thousands of items purchased on its Web site for pickup on local stores. They are offering this service at more than 750 of its U.S. stores.

Incidentally, they have been testing this special program since 2004 and it would be expanded to cover more than 3,300 stores by late summer.

The company believes that this would help them gain additional sales as web users would find it easier to order stuff online to pick them locally at their stores.

Mike Smith, Walmart.com?s director of store integration claimed that their testing has shown that customers spent an additional $60 in its stores when they went to pick up their orders.

Raul Vazquez, Walmart.com?s chief executive added that most web users are availing this service to order items which are only sold on their website. Most retail stores cannot carry all the items they sell online and as a result, customers get this added advantage of getting rarely find stuff.

Vazquez added: ?When we develop new services, it is with the Wal-Mart customer in mind.?

That is great, imo.

I love to shop online but hate to pay shipping charges when the store is less than 3 miles away.

Plus, there are loads of stuff I like on the website that is not in my local store, so this will be great.

And of course... there is the benefit of not actually have to spend the time in the store to shop. I can just order online, pick it up.

I hope there will be a designated place to pick up online orders. The customer service area is often a nuthouse.

Hmm, I wonder if this is the new use for layaway. It would make sense actually.

I have bad experience with one of my local Walmart. . Return/Exchange electronics product to Walmart can be hell when dealing with their low price (and also) low paid workers.

They usually have cheap shipping already, but I still think this is pretty warm. I hate going into walmart just because I'm usually in line for about 20 minutes during the day. I prefer meijer but their online store is horrendous to nonexistent.

Main reason I don't shop online there much is sales tax and shipping make any deal crap.

With this at least i'm only paying Tax.. not bad.

damn, this is cool because most walmarts are 24 hour. i wonder if you can pick up anytime, that would be extremely handy. i hate walmart and i never shop there, but if i can buy from their website and just pick it up a couple nights later that would be way too convenient. just think, you could buy 50" tv's of their website and not worry about how its going to be shipped...

yeh, but then you actually have to wander around the store whereas this way you just have to go to order pick up. therein lies a big difference.

From the OP:
Raul Vazquez, Walmart.com?s chief executive added that most web users are availing this service to order items which are only sold on their website.

Same thing happens at Fry's B&M and Fry's com. Not everything is sold at both places. I live near several Fry's, so most of my Fry's purchases are from their B&M, but I have bought items from Fry's.com when it wasn't available at the store.

This helps tremendously with the many electronic items previously only available for shipping to the Texas store. (San Antonio or Dallas; I don't remember which.)

For example....

$1100 for 37" 1080P LCD is nothing to sneeze at, Akai or not.

But my local small business hasn't issued stock. Therefore I can't fund my retirement from the profits they make.
Sorry

Bad example.
In later surfing, I found the same LCD was $900 at OD.

But there are other examples, I promise!

I couldn't agree more, however most of the people on this forum are looking for electronics. There are not to many Mom and Pop shops that carry 42" plasma screens at good prices. What products are you talking about specifically...there are just not a ton of Mom and Pop operations (Other then small eateries) that sell what Walmart sells...

If the store doesn't carry it, they wont ship it.

I bought a game that not in store, (Evolution Soccer 2007) because I had a gift card, they didn't have it in store. None of the areas near me have would be a appropriate shipping for Site to Store ship.

please don't parrot idiocy. You do realize that the whole idea that Wal-Mart ended Mom&Pop stores is bogus, right? Or are you just a parrot who needs its empty head filled with cliche's?

Mom&Pops were wiped out by multiple things.
1. Cars, people could suddenly get to other stores easier
2. The first generation big box grocery and retail stores (like sears)
3. and now the Net is whacking them

So, don't be a parrot, use the brain that is in your head.

oh - and don't crap threads

It isn't going to work yet unless you live in one of the following places: Northern California, eastern Texas, western Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, western Tennessee, western Illinois, and northern Mississippi.

It won't be available for me until May.

Complete list by state with availibility dates here.

Nice thread crap. No one cares about your personal vendetta with Walmart on a "Hot Deals" forum.

Thanks OP. Shipping charges really kill a lot of the good deals on Walmart's site so hopefully this will help out with some of that.

TYVM Alisolm and as expected us Hoosiers(IN) are dead last on the list.

Good luck on your retirement! My wife who works at Sam's has been investing in Walmart stock for the last 8 years and it hasn't made squat. We cashed it out and are investing in more profitable avenues. I guess you could be a Walton in which case this doesn't apply

Does anyone know if you can return online purchases to a B&M store?
