Which lens do you guys normally have on your camera when walking around?

Right now I'm rocking a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 but was wondering what the AT fella's have on their DSLRs. If I suffer enough from "lens envy" I may end up buying some new equipment

I just have the kit lens but I would love to have the

EF 16-35mm f2.8/L USM
or
Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L lens

the way I shoot i think i could use the
EF14mm f/2.8L USM as a walk around lens

My GP (general purpose) lens is the Canon EF 24-105mm, f/4, L with the EOS 5d camera. My previous camera was the EOS 20D, and the GP lens I used then was a Tamron XR DI 18-250mm f/5.6-6.3. Your Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is a good GP lens.

I use a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 on my XTi. I love having the constant apperature, but wish it was just a little longer. I'm waiting for Sigma to come out with its 4.5mm fisheye lens for crop bodies!

Ideally, I would like to have a 17-80 f/2.8 without the pincushion problems of Canon's 17-85 f/4-5.6.

Finally got the 5D/24-105 combo and I LOVE it. Put a few hundred clicks on it in two days, everything from panos of downtown Chicago xmas lights to a high school wrestling meet.

When I was using the 30D my walk-around lens was the Tamron 17-50. I agree though that it was just not long enough, and sometimes not wide enough.

Finding the walkaround for a crop body is tough. Seems most people (in the Canon camp) make do w/ two: 10-22 and 17-50/55/85.

18-200mm AF-S VR. gawd that's the ultimate walkaround lens. it's not perfect at anything, but it's good enough at it all to stay on my camera for mundane shots.

I have the 50-200, good lens ,compact and good pq, but not wide enough or fast enough for me, i use a carl zeiss flektogon 35/2.4 most of the time, planning to get sigma 17-70 or pentax 16-50/2.8 when I can afford it

Saw one at Bestbuy a couple of weeks ago... had to run out of the store before I bought it.

I actually have the same lens (the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8) as my walk-around lens. I find it to be nice and sharp and a great focal length for most things (sometimes lacking in the WA, telephoto can usually be corrected with the feet). I also have a 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Tamron lens for my wide-angle shots. I'll probably end up with the Canon 200mm f/2.8L lens sometime next year so I can do a few more sports shots and have a nice telephoto lens for the those times I need a long shot.

good PQ? It ended up doing pretty poorly at photozone.de I bought it before getting some opinions on it since I needed something longer, tried to use it often but I'm found that the resolution is really lacking and it can be obvious even compared to the kit lens...and especially any prime. I generally only use it when I need to go long, and don't have time to manually meter with my 135 f/3.5

I'll eventually get a 50 1.7 or faster but I fell in love with an old manual sears 300mm

And the user field samples of the 50-200 I have seen have been fantastic for the price throughout the entire range.

An interestin choice. I have done that. It is a good, fast, lightweight, sharp focus lens - and like the old days - you zoom with your feet!

i have the same tamron 28-75, though i might trade for something that has some wide angle. can something be a 'walkaround' lens if it starts at normal and only goes telephoto from there?

Ultimate Walkaround Lens:

10-600mm F/1.0L IS the size and weight of one of those DO lenses.

C'Mon Canon...make one already!

It'd probably be like $25,000.

erm, a 600mm f/1.0 lens would have an objective that is (suprise!) 600mm wide. ignoring size, weight, and cost, it could be done.

I'm obviously not ignoring size/weight

Yeah it COULD be done, but not in a size that would be acceptable.

I'm just dreaming - we can always do that.

Currently I only own the Nikkor 18-135mm, so I guess you could say it's my walk around lens

I love it, and basically shoot throughout the range in a typical photography trip

It's reasonably slow throughout the range (3.5-5.6), but since most of my shooting is done in bright Western Australian sunshine I've never found it particularly limiting.

I've thought about getting something like the 17-55mm Nikkor, but I firmly suspect that it would have a negligable impact on my ability to take great photos at this stage. If I can't produce amazing stuff with my current lens, I can't see how having a faster, sharper, and less barrel-distorted lens will magically help with my shot composition and framing skills and understanding of how to work with light...

When I feel that I've got a firm grip on the skills that underpin taking excellent photos, and that I'm being held back by my current walkaround, then I'll make the move

I'm a gadget lover too, and I'm not for a moment suggesting that better lenses don't open up new opportunities, allow you to extend your skills, and make taking great photos easier, but the cynic in me somethimes thinks that some people on here care more about their equipment and its specifications than learning to take and taking great photos

Not entirely sure how I ended up there, but anywho.

I'd suggest to the OP that he needs more wideangle cowbell in a walk around lens
