This is a rough estimate:

3% of my library has greater than 100 hours of play (dota2)
5% of the library has greater than 25 hours of play (less than 100)
5% of the library has greater than 15 hours play (less than 25)
7% of the library has greater than 10 hours of play (less than 25)
10% of the library has greater than 5 hours of play (less than 10)
10% of the library has greater than 2 hours of play (less than 5)
10% of the library has greater than 30 minutes of play (less than 5)
50% of the library has less than 30 minutes of play, or was never played at all


And as far as current trends are concerned, I only play dota2. thats it.

I havent touched about 10 games but I got them all during the summer steam sale. I'll get around to them.

My friend buys games on steam and his reasoning is "i want to become a game developer". He doesn't even play half the games he purchased from years ago. And he's not even on route education-wise to become a game developer.. Needs to get his act together. Using game developer as an excuse to play games all day. So all in all True! it is a waste of money.

According to Steamdb.info, I have 1,092 games in my Steam library. 554 of them (51%) have not been touched.

Seems about right. My Steam library is quite small, but considering physical boxed games (very few, nowadays) and my GoG library, I'd say a 60% play rate is in the right ballpark.
Also seems about right for board games.
Also seems about right for table-top strategy games.
Also seems about right for PNP RPGs.

This is a faulty inference, just because a game hasn't been loaded through steam doesn't mean that it's never been played.

When I polled the [H]ardOCP forum a few years back I found that a huge number of people were buying games on steam that they'd previously pirated and when they were on deal or had dropped to an appropriate price point they'd buy them simply to give money to the devs.

A great many other games also appear in multi-packs which normally offer up such big savings that it's cheaper to buy a pack with a bunch of games you don't want than buy the few you do want individually.

Also steam hasn't tracked games played correctly since the start of steam, in fact it wasn't until after a good 4-5 years they really started tracking stats correctly, I have games with zero hours listed which I've played on steam in the early days.
