Last night, around 10-12pm, my wallet and cell phone was stolen from my vehicle parked 10 feet from my garage door. My debit card, personal credit card, company credit card, and drivers license were stolen.

I didn't find out about the theft until around 7:30am this morning.

Beginning at approximately 2am, my debit card was used at 2 different Walmart stores for $385 and $465 charges. My company card was also used for approximately $150 in gas around 4:00am.

1) Called police; report forthcoming.
2) Notified all accounts of theft before 9:00am, including cell phone company.
3) Opened new checking account.
4) Obtained amounts/time/location of all charges and faxed to police.
5) Contacted all 3 credit unions and initiated fraud alert on my credit.
6) Monitored all accounts throughout the day, last charge shows up at 4:00am.

I also talked to the loss prevention department at one Walmart, and they seemed fairly aggressive with helping me out since the total amount was greater than $500.

I'm not worried about the money, as my bank has already stated they will cover the fraudulent charges.

I'm more concerned about my credit. Is there anything else I should be doing?

I don't know, it seems to me like you covered all of your bases. At this point I think the only thing you can do is wait for the processes to work themselves out.

Walmart going to be able to provide video of the person who used your debit card? (obviously used it as a credit card, unless you were silly enough to have your PIN number in your wallet.)

While I do keep more in my wallet than I should, a SS card or note with my PIN isn't going to be in there.

I'm supposed to be getting a call back tomorrow from loss prevention regarding the next step. He seemed very positive since I was able to give him the time of sale, exact amount, and last four digits of the now canceled debit card.

A co-worked mentioned that Walmart has a video of "everyone who checks out." I'm not sure if that's true though.

not to be a douche, but why do you keep your wallet in your unattended car overnight?

Summit has a point to..... But not putting you down, it happens to the best of us.

You have done all you can do at this point. Wait for Wal-Mart, they should be able to provide some video. And they can give it to the police. Your credit should be fine, not unless they did get your SSN.

You've taken good initial steps. Chances are the thief was just after some quick transactions before you cancelled everything and won't follow through with any further ID Theft. But, you should still closely monitor your credit report for any unusual activity, followup communications you have made with banks, credit card companies, etc, in writing, and keep copies of everything (communications, dispute letters, ID Theft Affidavits, fraudulent documents, etc)....you may have to prove you are a victim at some point. Jurisdiction can also become an issue and you may have to work with more than one law enforcement agency (local, state, federal)....so be prepared.

The Federal Trade Commission's site has a ton of information regarding ID theft and what to do. You should also file a complaint with the FTC. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/.

Additionally, if your information is used online, file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx.

Protect your personal information people....identity theft can be extremely difficult to straighten out.

Not everyone is delusional enough to think that where they live plays any role in who can come around in the middle of the night checking cars to see if there is anything worth stealing.

Just because someone doesn't live in the ghetto doesn't mean their car can't be broken in to or that a thief won't take anything that is in sight. I spent most of my life in the type of neighborhood where you could leave both your car door and front door unlocked at night and it only takes one time of getting your shit ripped out of your car with no regards for the amount of damage done to make you realize that it doesn't matter where you live.

So yeah, leaving your wallet in the car... really bad idea.

This is probably the best post in the thread. The bolded part is important. Keep track of towns, villages, and counties to make the proper report with the right agency. The theft may have occurred in the town you reside, but the fraud occurred in another, so a separate report MAY (depending on your local departments policies and procedures) have to be made with that other agency. Check with your local PD first.

Yeah, so go ahead and jump to a conclusion I didn't make. I never stated it was impossible to be robbed outside of the ghetto. Do not put words in my mouth.

I have left my doors/windows unlocked by accident while out of the country for weeks. Why should I worry? There is crime everywhere, but you bet your ass if I live in the Ghetto I would have triple-checked that shit before I left.
