Apparently this "deal" is for real and not totally dead!
I work for a Tulsa, OK. area company but am based out of NYC, where there are no 'Wally-Worlds'. I recently read the thread about the PHILIPS DVD-RW "deal" for $85-90. Since there was no indication that anyone checked the Tulsa area stores, I had one of my buddies check for me. Initially he came up dry, but last nite he finally had time to get to the 'SuperCenter' in the area, and was able to speak with the store manager.
The manager "confirmed" that Wally World Corporate HAD INDEED negotiated a special purchases deal for these DVD-RW drives, and his store and several others had gottem some in early December. His store had gotten just a few of them, and they blew-out virtually immediately (less than two hours). This was suppossed to be a pre-Christmas in-store promotion for the locations that got them. It was not advertised and not listed in the computer system, so when they arrived at the store, he (the manager) had to call Corporate for instructions on how to handle and price them. Thus, no advertisement - no nothing. If you're in the store shopping and find it --- YOU WIN! Suppossedly these types of special deals occur from time-to-time on different types of items, and Wally World places them in the stores as a kind of "Thank You" to their regular shoppers who are most likely to come across the deal.
Apparently, though, there was a shipping problem with a majority of the purchase from the distributor from whom Wally World got these, and most were NOT delivered prior to the Holidays to be sent out to the stores that were suppossed to get them. And as indicated in the initial thread, this was suppossed to be a special promo just for the SuperCenters.
From what he told my buddy, there is still a quantity (suppossedly two skids) of these that are still in the distribution system to be sent out to the stores. He further said that there is no way any store would know in advance if they would actually get any more of them or if they would be priced same as before --- around $ 85/90 (In the original thread, a few people did find them some in a few stores but priced fairly higher). They would just show up on the truck with regular deliverys, with a note to call Corporate for instructions. This also explains why the SKU and other numbers on the scanned receipts in the original thread are somewhat strange, and requires an over-ride at checkout.
So... if this information is correct, and my buddy is sure the he was getting valid information from the store manager at the Tulsa SuperCenter, then this deal is still a possibility, but will require all of us to keep checking the computer/electronics sections of the Wally Worlds, especially the SuperCenters, in our respective areas to see if they show up in the coming weeks.
Nothing ventured - nothing gained, but for such a deal, it is for sure worth at least checking regularly and keeping our eyes open. And if anyone finally gets a 'hit' on this, it should be posted immediately as that's the indication that the rest of them have finally been sent out to the stores.
Good Luck to all of us!
