No surprise here, Walmart high paid Lobbyists successfully pay off Federal Judge to keep Taxpayers paying for lowly paid employee health care costs.

7-29-3006 Federal Judge overturns Maryland Wal-Mart health care law

BALTIMORE - A federal judge on Wednesday overturned a Maryland law that would have required Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to spend more on employee health care, arguing the retail giant "faces threatened injury" from the law's spending requirement.

In Maryland, where state budget writers were looking for ways to rein in a $4.6 billion annual Medicaid tab, the Wal-Mart law was seen as a way to encourage companies to keep employees off public rolls. It became law last winter when the Democratic legislature overrode a 2005 veto by Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich.

If you have proof bring it up with the states attorney general. Otherwise you are blowing smoke out your ass, like usual.
It's been shown ad naseum in the thread as well as right in front of your nose in the article above:

the Wal-Mart law was seen as a way to encourage companies to keep employees off public rolls.

Who is blowing smoke out their ass now?

And how does that prove a judge was paid off?

Your thought process is seriously broken.

Explain when they are supposed to live when already working full time.

Interesting to hear your version of the American Dream. 100% of that 2nd job income supposed to pay the out of control greedy Insurance and health care Industry? Sure sounds like sweat shops in India.

Full time is defined as a 40 hour work week in the U.S.

It is 32 hours in France.

Your definition is an 80 hr work week with the full 2nd 40 hrs devoted for health care of which most of that would undoubtledly have to be used because the person is working his/her tail off, tired as sh!t and more than twice the French.

Shame on you and your disgusting ilk for even suggesting such barbaric times for the U.S.

Shame shame shame.

Yeah, I mean all those kids in the sweat shops in foreign countries (not here, because we have UNIONS, and WORKER'S RIGHTS LAWS) shouldn't complain about their pennies every hour. Heck, if they just work 20 hours a day, they could double their income! They just CHOOSE to waste time sleeping and eating.

Chicago Vs U.S. Sweatshops

7-27-2006 Chicago City Council OKs 'living wage'

CHICAGO - Brushing aside warnings from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the City Council approved an ordinance Wednesday that makes Chicago the biggest city in the nation to require big-box retailers to pay a "living wage."

The ordinance, which passed 35-14 after three hours of impassioned debate, requires mega-retailers to pay wages of at least $10 an hour plus $3 in fringe benefits by mid-2010. It would only apply to companies with more than $1 billion in annual sales and stores of at least 90,000 square feet.

"It's trying to get the largest companies in America to pay decent wages," Alderman Toni Preckwinkle said.

Other cities with living-wage laws include Santa Fe and Albuquerque in New Mexico; San Francisco; and Washington.

now instead of planning to build new stores in the city, like the ones in the poor inner city area, they're going to build a little past the chicago city limits in the chicago suburbs.

but it'll be a good test to see if the city's plan will work for the existing stores in the city.

sacrifice the present for the future... i like it. wish more politicians has that foresight instead of sacrificing the future for the present.

(ie: what imbicle pushes tax cuts after tax cuts for the rich while initiating a war in a foreign country which caused the doubling of our nations debt. now our children have to pay off that debt. boggles mind...)

I truly hope that if by some miracle the Country wakes up and tosses the rich and religious out of power that a law is passed sending these discrimination loving and America hating people packing.

Wally World is losing it's world dominance. Smart Countries turning them away.

7-28-2006 Wal-Mart pulling out of German market

BERLIN - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Friday it plans to sell its 85 stores in Germany to rival Metro AG, a move that effectively ends a nearly decade-long effort by the world's largest retailer to crack the market in Europe's biggest economy.

It would be the U.S.-based company's second international withdrawal this year. Wal-Mart pulled out of the highly competitive South Korean market in May.

Consumers rejected some of Wal-Mart's signature features, like stores outside of town centers, employees required to smile and heartily greet customers, or baggers at checkouts.

Walmart was foolish to try to simply transplant their model to another country and expect it to work. I'm amazed that they don't first experiment more and figure out what works in a particular country before they leap into it 100%.

7-28-2006 FDIC puts 6-mos. halt on bank approvals

WASHINGTON - Federal bank regulators have halted for six months any new approvals of the sort of industrial banks that Wal-Mart, Home Depot and 12 other companies are seeking to establish.

The application of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, to establish an ILC based in Utah has spurred opposition from banks, unions, lawmakers, and consumer and community organizations.

In addition to Wal-Mart and The Home Depot Inc., companies awaiting FDIC approval to establish ILCs include Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, automakers Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG, and information services provider Ceridian Corp.

Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., a principal sponsor of the legislation to block nonfinancial companies from owning the banks, said Bair "has taken the right step in giving Congress the ability to consider the implications of the increasing efforts to use ILC charters to avoid the long-standing separation of banking and commerce."

8-7-2006 Wal-Mart raises wages, inserts wage caps

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said its raising wages at nearly a third of its 4,000 U.S. stores and introducing wage caps at all stores

Workers at more than 1,200 stores will see their paychecks grow by an average 6 percent

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Chicago became the largest city in the nation to require big-box retailers to pay a "living wage," despite objections from Wal-Mart and other businesses. Chicago's City Council adopted an ordinance requiring major retailers to pay at least $10 an hour plus $3 in fringe benefits by mid-2010.

Gerald Celente, director of The Trends Research Institute in Rhinebeck, N.Y., an independent think tank that follows economic and other trends, said Wal-Mart appeared to be reacting to negative publicity about its pay following the Chicago ordinance.

"The increase in starting salary is a very smart thing to do," Celente said.

If Americans can't afford to get to Walmart we must be heading for the Great Republican Depression faster than I thought.

8-15-2006 Walmart posts first loss in ten years, blame gas prices

The last time Wal-Mart saw quarterly profit fall was in 1996.

Chief Executive Lee Scott said sales were disappointing at Wal-Mart's U.S. stores, its largest division. Customers were making fewer shopping trips to save gas, while Wal-Mart's own bills for fuel and utilities were up, he said.

"In the United States, customers tell us they are most concerned about gas prices"

Also...if any other people are like me, I try to shop at Wal-Mart as little as possible.

I will go to Target, HyVee, the farmers market, shopko, kmart...anywhere to avoid having to spend money there.

Most of the stuff they sell is garbage and the food sux...Produce rots really quick.

Speaking of groceries...take a look at the shelves...food is starting to come from China as well now.

Check this out - Wal-Mart is sending "voter guides" out to its employees in Ohio to try and influence how they might vote.

Wal-Mart takes aim at Democratic critics
No. 1 retailer sends 'voter guides' to its 18,000 Iowa employees, criticizing presidential hopefuls who have joined company's critics.
August 16 2006: 8:05 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wal-Mart Stores is hitting back at some leading Democratic presidential hopefuls who have joined with the company's critics recently.

The world's largest retailer announced it is sending out what it terms a "voter education guide" to its 18,000 Iowa employees, criticizing politicians who have recently joined with the union-backed group "Wake Up Wal-Mart" for a series of rallies. Iowa holds the nation's first presidential caucus, and potential candidates are already visiting the state.

"We believe it's wrong for these political candidates to attack Wal-Mart and the transformation under way at our company," the letter said. "We would never suggest to you how to vote, but we have an obligation to tell you when politicians are saying something about your company that isn't true."

The company's critics charge that Wal-Mart fails to provide health care for more than half its workers, pays what it calls "poverty" wages, and helps to shift U.S. jobs overseas by selling low-priced imports.

The Wake-Up Wal-Mart group issued its own release in response to the Wal-Mart voter efforts.

"We welcome Wal-Mart's attempts to try and defend itself with its employees, political leaders and the American people," the group's statement said. "The debate over Wal-Mart is of critical importance to the future of our country. Sadly, not one single employee or any citizen will ever hear the truth from Wal-Mart about the negative impact it has on its workers or working families because Wal-Mart does everything it can to hide its real record."

There's a difference between profit decline and profit loss. Read your own story, preferably the title before making another post citing an article.

I'm not sure if you realize it, but WM considers profit projection figures as what they're entitled to and any deviation to the downside of that projection they consider a "loss".
