10-2-2006 Wal-Mart to use more part-timers, wage caps: NYT

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is pushing to create a cheaper, more flexible work force by capping wages, using more part-time workers and scheduling more staff on nights and weekends, The New York Times reported on Monday.

Wal-Mart executives say they embraced the new policies for a large number of their 1.3 million workers to better serve customers, the newspaper said.

But some Wal-Mart workers say the changes are further reducing their modest incomes and putting a strain on personal lives, the newspaper reported

Investment analysts and store managers say Wal-Mart executives have told them the company wants to transform its work force to 40 percent part-time from 20 percent, the Times reported.

Wal-Mart denies it has a goal of 40 percent part-time workers, although company officials said part-timers now comprise 25 percent to 30 percent of its workers, up from 20 percent last October, according to the newspaper.

10-11-2006 Wal-Mart faces at least $62M in damages for forcing employees to work through breaks

PHILADELPHIA - A state jury found Thursday that Wal-Mart broke Pennsylvania labor laws by forcing employees to work through rest breaks and off the clock, a decision plaintiffs' lawyers said would result in at least $62 million in damages.

Jurors will return Friday to determine damages in the class-action lawsuit, which covers up to 187,000 hourly current and former workers.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant is facing a slew of similar suits around the country.

10-19-2006 Wal-Mart's 1.3M workers urged to vote against Democrats

Wal-Mart entered the political fray this summer with a letter to workers in Iowa naming politicians who had attacked the company.

The letter named four Democrats who are all potential 2008 Democratic contenders: U.S. Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Joseph Biden of Delaware, and Govs. Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Tom Vilsack of Iowa.

Corporate ethics consultant Alice Peterson of Chicago-based Syrus Global said Wal-Mart was well within its rights to inform employees about issues that it believes could hurt it.

Analysts said Wal-Mart is making a public point of encouraging workers to vote and of naming critical politicians to dissuade candidates, mainly Democrats, from backing an increasingly organized union campaign for changes including better wages and benefits.

"Wal-Mart's decision to declare war on Democrats who are calling on the company to pay a better wage, provide affordable health care, and treat its employees with dignity and respect is a disgrace, and shows just how right-wing Wal-Mart has become," said Paul Blank, campaign director for WakeUpWalMart.com.

Either Walmart and Target bolt or the costs of the product would rise and thus put the crunch on the primary clients of these retailers, the middle and poor classes.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

There seemd to be a rising tide of people who think employers should actually have to pay employees a living wage.

OMG. the sky is falling, the sky is falling.

You'd think that a company who gets most of it.s products from cheap overseas labor would be able to afford to pay it's employees a decent wage. It sure seems to have the resources to hire anti-labor consultants. I think it should be illegal (on a federal level) for public corporations to contribute to political campaigns or pull political stunts like this.

You already admitted in another Walmart thread you paid them 7-10 bucks an hour. We all laughed out loud at your for complaining about Walmarts pay and benefits program while providing worse lmao.

BS, show me the thread or STFU. I've never had a full time employee in my life, the few times I've had to hire a little extra help (other then custom combining, spraying, etc.) I've paid them more then they've asked for. Is Walmart doing that??

Now, find the thread so everyone can read whatever it is you "think" I said in it's whole context or STFU.

I've had no complaints from anybody that's worked for me, ever. Can Walmart say that? Hell , they even have the advantage of having products produced by cheap foreign labor and they still can't pay a decent wage. To me that's a sign of either piss-poor, incompetant or greedy management, maybe even both.

I wont go search through the forum to find your quotes that werent taken out of context. I flat out asked you what you paid your workers and your response was 7-10 bucks.

To that we all laughed.

Yeah, talk is cheap, put up or shut up.

Actually around here $10/hr isn't a bad wage if the job has benifits, it's definitley a livable wage.

Like I said before, I've never had a full time employee. I worked full time myself and farmed a farm that was over a 50 mile drive (one way) from where I live. I was also working 50 hours a week just at my job so I had to hire all my combining and spraying done, and I've ocassionally hired a neighbor to do a small job here and there, but that was not even once a year.

So just keep right on laughing and believing it the way you want to remember it and I will keep right on laughing at your obvious jealousy.

I can tell by the amount of time you have to post on this forum just how hard of a worker you really are. It seems you spend as much time complaining about the poor people as you do actually doing any work.

Sounds good. I hope you'll include unions in that. My mother got bombarded with political crap from the union telling her to vote for Democrats when she was a public school teacher.

Sell WMT, buy TGT. Heard it here first. Speaker Pelosi will not forget this. Democrats on local level won't forget it either next time WMT wants to open a store. And some of their customers won't forget it either.

I have been trying to wean myself from Walmart (hard to do in a small city where most of the competition has been killed off), but this is the last straw.

If she had to be in the union to have her job, then yes. If the union membership is voluntary, then no.

Yeah, they'll have to consult Hillary Clinton. If anyone wants to understand the connection, do a Google search. HINT: Mrs. Clinton and Wal-Mart are tied at the hip.

Oh please, Democrats love corrupt behemoths just as well as Republicans do. It all depends on which corrupt behemoth it is and how much money they "donate" to the cause.

Just look a the corrupt entertainment industry trying to lock everything up under DRM. When's the last time a Democrat turned down money from them?

No, you dolt. The Clintons helped Wally because Wally has a lot of cash. And the Clintons need(ed) lots of it. If you'd actually read instead of spouting off at the mouth, you'd see that Hillary was on the board of directors for some time, and also did legal work (yes, the infamous Rose Law Firm) for them, collecting considerable sums.

It sure grew alright, into a corrupt behemoth only Republicans like yourself love.

So what if Wally urged everyone to vote Democrat? Would you sing their praises?

Sheeple is too easy of a word for people like you. Take a look at the money Wally has funneled to Democrats sometime.
