I gave up on unions when I noticed there is a textile retailers union or something liek that in town. Yup, that's right. There isa union for people that SELL CLOTHES! One of hte stores went on strike in town over union problems and it actually motivated me to shop there for the first time ever.

10-16-2004 Wal-Mart may close only unionized store in North America

MONTREAL (AFP) - Retail powerhouse Wal-Mart said it was "concerned about the economic viability" of its store in Canada which is the only one of its outlets in North America to be unionized.

The Jonquiere store is not meeting its business plan, and the company is concerned about the economic viability of the store.

Wal-Mart Canada believes the unresolved labor situation at the Jonquiere store is proving detrimental to improving the performance of the store.

In August, Canadian trade unionists proclaimed a "great victory" after winning the right to form the first labor union at a branch of the world's largest retailer.

Efforts are underway at other Wal-Mart stores in Canada to win labor union recognition.

Low labor costs have allowed the firm to slash prices on goods in its huge stores, which stock groceries to golf clubs and everything in between.

Only a few meat cutters in Texas have so far managed to outflank the firm's efforts to avoid unionization.

At least now we know how to get rid of Walmarts. Unionize them, they go away!

That's funny cause I'm part of a union and I watch over "many" systems that save people's lives as well as protect you as a citizen.

I must be lazy and worthless to work in a position where an entire Province is at my fingertips and potentially everyone's lives are as well.

Gotcha...I'll keep that in mind.

Ill rephrase it for you then.

Unions for skilless jobs like merchandising, working lot, and cashiers, are corrupt and counterproductive to any store they are present in.

NO cashier, stocker, or cart pusher should make $18+ an hour like they often do in california.

Go ahead, strike, its not like you cant be replaced by ANYONE with 2 days of training.

the $18/hour figure is just a ploy used by albertson executives to spread anti-union sentiment amongst ignorant public. how many ppl per store make that much? 1 and its the assistant manager. most actually make $7-10/hour and that'd be the minimum if u want to be able to pay rent in CA

funny thing when my friend who scabbed for them in the middle of the strike got sent an expired check from albertsons for 1 cent a few months after the strike ended. it would cost him more to cash it since its expired. and it cost them more to send it by 32 cents.

10-24-2004 Wal-Mart Is Protested at Mexican Ruins New Store

TEOTIHUACAN, Mexico - More than 300 demonstrators streamed into the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan on Sunday and climbed part way up the towering Pyramid of the Sun, the latest in a string of protests against the construction of a Wal-Mart-owned store nearby.

Lugging huge banners and waving signs decrying Wal-Mart and other international corporations, protesters who had chosen to stay out of the national park during previous demonstrations surprised tourists and visitors by setting up near the ruins' tallest pyramid.

The 2,000-year-old ruins are 25 miles northeast of Mexico City.

Construction of the store ? Bodega Aurrera, a Mexican subsidiary of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ? is nearing completion, and those opposed to it have promised to organize larger demonstrations as its opening date approaches.

I have to admit, it is a good machine. My sister needed a computer so I got one for her for Christmas.

12-21-2004 Wal-Mart unveils cut-price laptop under 500 dollars

The world's biggest retailer Wal-Mart is offering price-conscious US consumers the cheapest laptop on the market, priced at just 498 dollars, in a move described by some analysts as a "significant milestone."

The Balance notebook, armed with a 41.1 inch LCD screen, a 1.0 GHz processor and 128 MB RAM of memory, comes equipped with the Linux-based operating system Linspire.

It hits the shelves loaded with a Microsoft-file compatible office suite and users can access the Internet with both a dial-up modem and broadband connections.

Its price tag undercuts rival laptops on the market by several hundred dollars, with others offering starting prices around 700 dollars.

"It is certainly interesting, without Windows you can more easily bring the price down. Five hundred dollars for a notebook, I think it's a significant milestone," said Charles Smulders, an analyst with Gartner, the technology research group.

This proves what wal-mart has been in denial over for years: That any time a worker tries to unionize, managemt harraes them with extra unpleasant work untill they decide to quit and if the employee does not quit soon he or she gets fired for some spontainious reason.

As soon as wal-mart finds out about a pro-union empoyee they watch, scorn, and scutenize his every move.

While 128 Megs of Ram may be crappy. I'd love the 41.1 inch LCD Screen.

And to think Dave is supporting these practices with his wallet. For shame. Good news, though - he must be doing OK to spend $500 on his sister for X-mas.

I'm rather disappointed in you, Dave. Shopping at old Wally World must have been quite an experience, eh? The horror.

It was a horror. The new Lows I have reached this year just don't stop coming.

Hey Acanthus, Just cause you have no skills to bargain i.e. no leverage, don't think Union members are "lazy and worthless", they just have good sense not to work at walmart LOL

1) the guy should get fired, but the supervisor needed to follow the correct procedures to fire him. the supervisor should get fired for being an idiot as well, and losing the company money.

2) is that a problem with the unions? sounds like a process problem to me. what would happen if there were no unions? companies would hire the cheapest labor possible AND still use the cheapest materials and you'd have the same problem with crappy buildings.

3) why do you have a problem buying american made materials? most basic goods in our economy are protected against foreign goods. it may be more expensive, but it also benefits people here a lot more than if you were to buy foreign materials.

4) i dont see the ports hurting for money. the only thing the port is that getting a job there is all about who you know, that's something they need to fix.
