Walmart and PC Games

I had to go to our local Walmart today, and decided I wanted to buy Far Cry 2 to enjoy with my upgraded video card (a GTS 250).

The PC Gaming section in this store used to be huge. It was a chest-high shelf maybe 20 feet long with a ton of games spanning the range from new and recent releases to older standards and CD compilations.

In the last year or so it has been shrinking pretty steadily, to where it was maybe six feet of shelf space. But at least the last time I was in there they had Far Cry 2. Today when I got to the rear of the store I couldn't find the PC section. Where it had been (right across from 40 feet of eight foot glass cases containing hundreds of console games) there were movies.

I hunted around in that aisle a bit, and I did find a row of 15 or 20 discount titles on a single shelf in a corner of one of the Wii sections. I also found a clerk and asked him where the PC games had gone. He directed me around the corner to a shelf maybe three feet wide with mostly empty space. It wasn't even in the entertainment media section with all the other games. It was in the batteries, accessories, and cameras section. There was no Far Cry 2. In fact there were very few new releases. Two copies of COD:WaW. A copy of the Oblivion GoY bundle. A couple of copies of COD4. Maybe 30 copies of CD compilations ("100,000 Games! Better than ever!"). There was a copy of DemiGod, and one of Sins of a Solar Empire. A few others.

I had already given up on Gamestop. All three of our local stores were down to just a few PC titles last time I was in them. Now it looks like Walmart is pretty much out of the business. I was already more or less convinced that PC gaming is dead, and this seems like a pretty clear indication of it. Doesn't really matter if there are still good titles in dev. If there were a market of any size left I don't think Walmart would ignore it.

So I guess it's either Steam or online purchases for whatever number of years PC gaming has left. Has anyone else noticed a similar trend in their local big box stores?

I purchased a PC game for the first time in walmart just a couple days ago and there were I believe 12 ft of regular shelf games and another 9 of those wire racks with cheap CD case sized games. The Target near my house has 12 ft of the regular games, 6 ft of edutainment crap and 9 ft of the wire racks or there abouts.

I'm in Gamestop land here and I've noticed a huge difference in shelf space for PC games from store to store.

Then of course there's Fry's where the PC section is nearly the size of the entire console section.

Yeah, maybe it is just this Walmart then. We have another about the same distance in the other direction, so maybe I will have a drive up there. But they are both very high traffic stores. The latter one is maybe in a little higher income demographic.

Hmm my Walmart has decent selection of games, and has new titles. FC2 definitely is there.

my walmart has a pretty big pc game selection, their main problem is they virtually never price adjust to keep up with the market until way after everyone else..and that they've gone and put all CDs and DVDs and Pc games behind the same stupid glass enclosed displays that the console games are behind so browsing the section totally sucks.

That is the problem. Walmart isn't cheap when it comes to PC games so they really don't sell that many to PC gamers. Most of the PC games they do sell are probably sold to people buying gifts who don't know where to shop or even which games are any good. Since they don't sell many PC games they don't stock a lot of them. It has nothing to do with the state of PC gaming.

The phenomenon of increasingly small pc games section in department stores is not limited to Walmart, or the US. I have witnessed this in both Spain and Ireland in every department store and shop I have entered.

For some strange reason, many people still argue that DRM is not hurting the industry and deny the fact that we are gradually being herded towards consoles.

Of the 3 Walmarts near me only 1 has a decent PC gaming section with all the newest releases. They other 2 have next to nothing.

I think a large percentage of people simply buy their games online now, Amazon, Gogamer, EB, etc.

I think a large percentage of people have been forced to purchase in this manner. I used to buy a lot of second-hand games. This option has been largely removed.

This is also going to happen on the consoles. They are going to try to stop the used game business all together.

I couldn't agree more.

Many people advocate the use of consoles over the pc as a gaming platform, given that you avoid driver issues, DRM and a host of other potential problems. However, if the developments within the pc gaming industry are anything to go by, it is only a matter of time before second-hand console games become a thing of the past.

I foresee a future wherein we will purchase (lease) all games online directly from the companies: the ever-decreasing size of the pc games section in large department stores and shops exclusively dedicated to games is a symptom of this process.

The ineptitude and incompetence of those 'running' the industry will cause another electronic gaming implosion and the situation will sort itself out.

I only buy used games now. I know they're trying to find a way to stop that but for now I don't buy any games new.

If you still want to buy Far Cry 2 I am actually selling my retail copy I got from Gamestop. Put about 50 hours into it and moved onto KZ2 for PS3. But yeah Walmart is pretty lame for PC games IMO.

While I like being able to buy my game 24/7 online from a place like Steam, sometimes I enjoy just being able to look at the boxes, flip them over, and look at them in a store. It's getting harder here too as Gamestop and Bestbuy are almost blank of pc games and Walmart's selection here has shrunk roughly 50% to about 10' of space.

Wasn't there a thread around here somewhere about Walmart going into the business of buying/selling used games?

I could have swore there was . . . maybe I read that somewhere else.

That's me as well. I used to really enjoy wandering through the games section just checking things out and deciding what to buy.

They're just leasing some Wal-Mart floor space, but the kiosks are ran by a 3rd party.

The Wal-Mart in town has a single half-length shelf about 5-6ft tall that's not fully stocked. Best Buy has 4 double-sided 5ft tall shelves full of PC games.

The Wal-Mart where I used to live (West Virignia) had a huge PC games section. That was several years ago, though.
