When you build your business on only giving them 10 hours a week any time any day of the week you pick sure.

They are open 24hrs per day. 8hr day per employee = 3 shifts or 21 shifts per week. One worker can only work 5 shifts per week if full time. A store probably needs at least 50 employees present to run properly. Around 5 employees to cover a single shift for the week, so 5*50 = 250 full time people to cover all shifts. Take into account most are part time and you have ~500 part timers to cover the store. 5 stores * 500 people = 2500 people, which aligns well with what they said.

However bad the economy is or was in the past, Walmart always seems immune.

Mostly sarcastic but I do find it odd there have been no permits have been pulled and all the closed stores were closed were for the same reason.

some of their stores are immense, open 24 hours, and mostly staffed with part timers so you need more employees to fill in the gaps.

so yea, 400 employees per store doesn't sound to far off.

I've been to their stores in my area for work in the middle of hte night, these aren't the "super" walmarts, and not open 24 hours, still had about 40 employees unloadin trucks and stocking shelves on the night shift.

possibly a legal thing? can't just fire everyone for wanting to unionize, close the store for 6 months, all those employees go elsewhere for work, rehire process a month before store opens, don't rehire people who used to work there.

pretty solid business strategy.

Of course, people reporting that could always be tinfoiling...

Honestly if people want to unionize, I don't know why you would try to start at the single store level....

Either way, I hold no sympathy for people stupid enough to unionize for RETAIL jobs.. Dur hurrr... Between now and when the store re-opens 50% of the workers for those stores will have their workers recycled. Too much turnover
