Walmart - Dell Inspiron 537 marked down from $500 to $300, 19" LCD included

I thought that this had another thread, but I cannot find it. Anyways, this deal broke like two weeks ago, but it appears that many Walmart stores freshly restocked today or something. At least two stores around me did.

I did the math, and it would cost around $250 to build just the PC, and then you have the 19" LCD monitor to purchase too. So this deal, while not super-powerful, is cheaper than you could build for the price. I haven't done it yet, but it seems rumored that you can just drop in a cheaper dual-core CPU too, if you wanted to.

Pretty nice deal. The deal was posted over at fatwallet about 3 weeks ago. The CPU can even be upgraded to quad core as long as you use something better than the original heatsink that comes with the Celeron in this system.

I built two systems with the Celeron 440 and they were quite snappy in Windows XP.

Tried Windows 7 RC1, and system was still very useable for general purpose computing. Boot times were noticeably slower than dual core system running Windows 7 RC1.

If you are price constrained and don't do a lot of multi-tasking, still think it is a great deal.

I picked up one of these systems for my dad a couple of weeks ago (to replace his aging PowerEdge 400sc). Not everyone needs a dual quad-core workstation, and for those that just browse the web, email, play solitaire, whatever, this is a solid system at a great price. I haven't messed with it much, but seemed to be fairly responsive with the preloaded Vista Home Premium x64 running on it. For him, it is perfect - Celeron haters be damned.
