Where is the best place to buy an lcd if you are scared to death of dead pixels? I'm guessing I just shouldn't get one and wait till the day when a man can buy an lcd without phear.

My 17" Panel has only a single dead pixel and its rarely noticeable. Most vendors have dead pixel policies as well. Most likely a brick and mortar store would allow you to open the box and check.

That's one of my fears right now. I mean these things still cost a lot of money. That will quickly change though with manufacturing methods improving. My next monitor will definately be an LCD and by then, it should be all fixed. I say buy it in a store and raise hell about checking the one you're buying and check the return policy.

Go to the store and look at the LCDs on display. Can you spot the dead pixels?

I've 2 on mine and I can't see it during normal use. When I run monitor test I can see it but it still takes me like a minute to scan and spot it. I would worry about backlight leakage much more than dead pixels. Almost all LCDs I've seen has backlight leakage. My laptop has it pretty bad.

As of writing this the best brands are:

* Lite On, Phillips and Hitachi. All three have a zero tolerance to dead pixels but Phillips doesn't count unlit pixels as dead.
* HP will only replace a monitor with there are 4 scattered faulty pixels or 3 clustered.
* LG will replace a monitor if there are 2 within a 10cm circle.
* NEX-NEC will replace 3 lit, 3 unlit or 6 color.
* Samsung could try harder. Six dead pixels allowed on a 15", or nine on a 17", are too many.
* Sony will replace if on a 15" panel there is 2 lit, 2 unlit or 4 dead. On 17" panels Sony will replace if there are 3 lit, 3 unlit or 7 dead.
* Viewsonic will replace if on a 15" panel there is 2 lit, 2 unlit or 4 dead. On 17" panels Viewsonic will replace if there are 3 lit, 3 unlit or 7 dead.

If it makes you feel any better, I cannot find ONE single dead pixel on my NEC MultiSync LCD1765.

I have a Hitachi 17" LCD. I have a single green pixel (subpixel) in the upper right corner that's barely visible. Found it 4 months after I got the monitor. It still takes me minutes to find it even though I 'know' where it's at, and it's not even visible if it's in the middle of a light color like white. (Barely visible against dark colors like black or blue).

I transported my LCD the other day and when I turned it on at the other house, there was a -bright- green pixel (like horrible, very noticable) Luckily it went away when I pressed on the screen slightly.

I also have an NEC (MultiSync LCD 1545V) and no dead pixels. I've had it for 2 years now.

I also bought a Samsung 712N about a month ago. Found 1 dead pixel, but it wasn't noticable until the screen was completely white.

I think it's pretty safe to buy one.

I wanted a LCD so I went to Staples (easy return policy) and bought a Samsung 213T. Unfortunately, it had a cluster of 3 dead pixels and a bit of ghosting in games. I bought a Viewsonic VP201S to compare it against. Better in games, but I hated the screendoor. Brought the 2 back and came back with another 213T. That 213T had one dead pixel (didn't mind it) but one messed up pixel that would lite up green instead of black and red instead of white. REALLY annoying. Brought it back to exchange it and the store manager didn't want to exchange it and refunded my money instead.

I'm not sure what to do now. I really wanted 1600x1200 for work. I might go to a dual 19" instead (same price!) but I heard they don't look good because they in 1280x1024..

The build quality and success rate behind most 17" LCD panel is much better than it used to be. I purchased 2 x Hitachi CML174SXW's and not one had either a dead or stuck pixel. A number of stores may well do a pixel check for you for a small charge.

The denser the panel's pixels, the harder it is to see dead pixels. I have a few dead pixels on both of my LCDs, but the one's on my 15 inch are much, much more noticeable than on my 20".
