I have a nephew who's going to graduate HS in a year. I'm not entirely sure he's the studious type for college and i think he might fare better working with his hands. What are some trades with good long term prospects (pay and job security)?

Electrician. Good pay, don't have to deal with poo like with plumbing, too difficult/dangerous to be taken over by untrained illegals.

How much math do you need to be an electrician?

Not very much after schooling. Is he good conceptually or with elaborate concepts? If hes a gamer he should be ok.

While I may be biased automotive repair has a big upside right now in todays market. Even going to a lincoln tech or some other regional option can get you work quick. Does he like cars?

Tinters make crazy money too..

I don't think that being an electrician requires too much math. There's a reason it's a trade and not an engineering discipline.

To make a good career out of it though you can't just do home wiring. Industrial, high-voltage & similar stuff are what you want to do in the long run.

Yeah he likes cars. Seems like there are a ton of mechanics though, didn't know it was still a good field.

I always thought being a welder would be cool but that's probably just because of the torch.

If he wants to travel welders are in huge demand. In Delaware the Tech school electrician program and finishing the journymans program is good for 2 years of college credit two more years and your set with the power company for life. A great deal.

Welders travel? Edit: Oh you mean working on bridges and infrastructure projects?

Welding sucks. The sparks burn your skin, the light burns your skin and eyes, the fumes fill your lungs with trash,,,,.

I hate welding, I absolutely hate, hate, hate welding.

Machinist, tool and die maker. Electrician is always good, as mentioned, although it took a bit of a hit when the housing market slumped.

Hell no, I aint no stupid welder, I am a fitter.

How do you make a welder?

You take a welder in one hand, a 2x4 in the other hand, you beat that fitter in the head until he has lost all of his sense, and you have a good welder.

I have been a certified welder under ASME section 8, which is the pressure vessel and heat exchanger code. Section 8 is also part of the code that covers boilers.

The stuff I built, if it blew up, people died.

A couple of things about welding, its a valuable skill, and its a portable skill.

If you like working with your hands, welding is a good skill to learn. If you do not want to make a living with it, knowing how to weld will serve you well in life.

How are you supposed to build stuff like this not knowing how to weld

Welders are like women. They are always on their backs asking for more heat, more rod, and more money.

If he wants to do something like electrician and all that he should really consider looking at the military. He can get some real job experience and his journeyman's in something like electrician while he's in and have pretty good opportunities when he gets out along with some good benefits.

Do you actually have a choice of what you want to do in the military or could they just stick a rifle in his hands and make him fight?

I can only comment on the Marines, but you contract into the job field. The only way you get put into a different one is if you fail the school a few times and then they re-MOS you.

That being said, even an electrician on a convoy can man a gun or something like that if Afghanistan is still going on. There are always risks with the military but they won't take his job field and turn him into an infatryman.

If he can get in, Air Force or Navy, electronics and telecommunications tech.

US Air Force operates the largest community college in the world.

In four years, he can earn a two year degree and enough GI bill to pay for four more years of college.
