If you mean m5a78 https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Ml5A78LM_LX/HelpDesk_CPU/
then just check or update the bios and stick an fx8300 on it and call it a day.

An fx6300 runs $65 on newegg, and might do. (the stock cooler is a bit junk though).

a stick of 8gb ddr4 will run u over $70 alone, or about a third of your budget. the budget am4 a320's won't OC, making the r3 1200 somewhat poor of a match; 1600 clocks much better but would bring you over the price target.

The main thing to be aware of is carefully taking the heatsink off without yanking the CPU off the socket (the pin locks are not very strong). It helps to run the computer beforehand, to heat the cpu and heatsink so that you lower the viscosity of the thermal paste.

you can search youtube for the topic; eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKZX_R4X4Os

Also, check that all pins are straight, and be careful in aligning and seating the CPU. Pins are fragile. Consider it as practice for your future AM4 build.

When you go into the bios setup, what version and date does it display.

The 6300 is a very common and earlier Piledriver CPU, so it's likely that no update is required. But check the bios date anyways, and let us know what version.

For the prices that used fx-6300's are going for, probably quite a good upgrade: L3 (which was missing in propus), boost freqs (4+ghz), extra threads, the missing SSE 4.x, and a good match for the board.

I'm not sure what is a good way to test cpu. I suppose make sure that seller seems reputable. Does he have a return policy? Check that the pins are straight, or straight enough and will seat easily into board. If he hadn't abused the CPU with overclocking, it's unlikely that it's faulty. (If there's some way seller can either let you plug the CPU into your board or run off his board and demo the CPU booting and running some stress test like geekbench or boinc, or even heavy chrome browsing and various user tasks, then that would be a little assurance.) With hopefully a price of <= $50 the downside from risk is at least somewhat limited.
