i know nothing about blenders. in fact don't know much about most kitchen appliances but now have to buy them because we moved to a new place. i want to buy a blender thats strong enough to chop ice so i can make smoothies and other cold icy drinks. i see one in costco few weeks ago that's all metal and looks good, its oyster or oster or something. anybody have a good powerful one that they recommend?

You want either (a) a professional line of blenders at nearly $200+ or (b) a smoothie maker. Typical blenders just will never work well for chopping ice. I've broken far too many cheap blenders in my quest for that little bit of info.

Get a Wave action one so that it actually works with things like smoothies and shakes.

I think Hamilton Beach has one.

No, do it by your own hands - will be very tasty
Say "NO" to hi technology tools like blenders and mixers!

I paid around $100 for my Cuisinart a couple of years ago. Have made at least a few protein shakes (ice, milk, powder) a week with it and it is still going strong.

Its not top of the line but its not a $25 dollar - motor burn out in a week blender either.

I bought one of the Oster beehive blenders and use it pretty much just for making daiquiris. It does the job nicely. The beehive is a fairly heavy metal job. I would avoid almost all of the plastic bodied blenders. I don't think I've ever had one last over a year.

Oster Beehive blender $48.83

Oster Stainless 12 speed blender $33.72

The second one might do the job, but from my experience the push buttons end up getting screwed up after a while. The beehive could come with just a toggle switch or a dila switch. Mine has the toggle so it's wide open or pulse.

I have an Oster that does a good job on ice.

Just whichever you choose, make sure it has a glass pitcher and not plastic.

looks like the one at costco is the Oster beehive but in black. i guess if it ever breaks costco will gladly take it back. i think i remember it was a metal base and glass. i guess i'll give that a try.
