Does anyone think this is resonable? At all? I can see a arguement being made for the commercial part. Buisnesses can have gates etc installed which can take some time to get into. I'm not saying I agree with it... but I can see how a arguement can be made.

Now this is being rolled out into apartments? Seriously? Sam will get the keys to my home over my cold dead body.

Cliff: A town is requiring apartment tenants and commercial businesses provide a copy of their keys.

Got news for ya... if you live in an apartment, there's a high chance the landlord has a master key for ALL the locks.

I don't and I know. There is a big difference between a apartment complex having the key and the government. Per government regulations the apartment company has to provide, I believe, a 24 hour advanced notice of them entering your apartment.

When does it become homes? Are you OK with that?

I thought the fireman's axe was the universal key.

I'd rather punch a small hole in a door to a room that is going to belch fire when exposed to airflow than open a door to it anyway.

Exactly, and there is no "sneaking" a axe and opening a door.

Got news for ya... the owner of the building having a key and the .gov having requiring a lockbox with a key in it that they have access to are very different things.

Home are different.

You don't own an apartment.
You rent or lease it.

I can own an apartment building. Why should the .gov have keys to my private property? I would much prefer that they kick the door down or use an axe than to have a lockbox with the keys that they (and who the hell knows who else) has access to.

How could anyone in their right mind think that this is a good idea on any level (barring extremely special circumstances)?

i'm not saying it's a good idea... but it's not a OMGGUBMINTRAGEEEEEEEEEEE idea either.

edit:
i could come up with a scenario where it would be "useful" ... but then again... i have a kid.

The government has no need to have a key to anyones property. They always use some altruistic purpose to get a law passed, but time and time again we see how they abuse the laws they pass.

"We had to look in your apartment because we thought they were selling drugs out of it. BTW we found some guns and took those and will check their serial numbers to make sure they are legal. We also took your cash and ate some of your food too."

This. Right now it's not a problem when they break open doors; they don't do it unless they need to and you know they've done it because you're the one who needs to fix it. With a key, people could just come and go any time they want. The police could have been in your house, looked around, then left without you knowing. I don't like that idea.

So far the breaking doors method works fine. Fire fighters smashed through my door in no time at all.

Eventually they'll fuck this up and blame the home owner. Example: I have a metal container that some candy came in, but I use the container to store a lot of other things because it's a really good container. If I had something like rat poison in there and one of the feds ate it because it looked like candy, is that my fault? Are they going to charge me because of their own stupidity? Don't think they won't. They already want to throw you in jail if they do a no knock search of your house and you kill one of them because you thought they were burglars.

These are tactics practiced by businesses. The US government has turned into a business.

You allowed the capitalist overlords to swarm your government. You now serve this entity, which is made up of people seeking to make more money for themselves, at your expense.

Pat yourselves on the back. Your fear and racism allowed this to happen - enjoy it.

so? you don't give up your rights just because you rent or lease.

this has potential to be bad. very bad. The government should NOT have keys to anyone business or residence.

I suspect this will be struck down after a few lawsuits.

Just imagine the cops going into your apartment, then they drink and eat your food, watch your widescreen TV, and watch some stuff on your computer. Dont think it will happen? This is a system ripe for abuse. What about laws for breaking and entering?

Nuff Said.

Well, at least now, when they kick in your door while serving a warrant at the wrong address, at least they won't have to destroy everything in the doorway.

Most apartments use a deadbolt (brand is on lock). Mine had a kwikset generic. I swapped out with one I bought at walmart, looks the same, works the same. I'm the only one with a key. I switched the old one back after I moved out.

Was it against the lease agreement? Of course. Nobody will know unless they try to open it.

What key(s) must be in the lockbox?

Is it the key to get into the (main) building or the keys to every unit?

I can't agree with keys to every unit. Seems dangerous to me, someone will figure out how to open the lockbox and rob each unit.

slippery slope there you got.

What if I'm paying a mortgage, I don't technically own the house, the bank does. Banks are under the control of the feds, so should the federal government have a key to my house? By your logic, yes.

So, because some power hungry nutcakes in a town want the keys to apartments, it was due to government corruption purported by corporations? Okay, I've seen some strange connections between corporations and the government, but this takes the cake.
