Yikes. Everyone chill. I didn't mean to start a flame war by sneaking in Apple refurbs.

OP, as stated Hackintoshes are, well, hacky. Especially for laptops. Refurbs still come with the same 1 year warranty and all that. Never done one myself but I hear only good things, and is a cheap entry point. Also, if you're in school check out the education store as the usually have a 10% discount. (don't think it applies to refurbs but maybe you can get new for similar price.)

Alright, I came off harsh and dickish, but honestly, I thought it was pretty funny that the OP, who wanted to put OS X onto a laptop, was shown a spec list, was impressed by the spec list, and then was told it was a Mac.

The funny part is the person looking for a laptop that runs OS X seemed surprised when someone recommended a Mac.

If you think that a person shouldn't put a modicum of research into what they want to do before going off and just asking questions then so be it. I disagree, I think it makes things a whole lot smoother if the questioner is at least educated about the subject matter. Caveat Emptor essentially, if for no other reason.

You came and posted your original question, I asked you some questions and you answered them. I recommended a used MacBook (which would be in your price range), and someone else recommended a refurbed MacBook.

I just assumed that someone looking for an OS X capable laptop would have first familiarized themselves with what the big A has to offer. Yes, you did notice that the MacBook Pro costs $1200, well done. But you apparently did no research or investigation on your own past that.

Anyone that had done say... 5 minutes of looking would have noticed that all of the laptops on Apple's website say that they get at least 7 hours of battery life. Anyone that had spent 5 minutes looking would have noticed lots of other sites bringing it up as well.

This has nothing to do with the fact that I have a Mac and just assume that everyone knows as much about them as I do. I never assume that, I almost always assume that everyone is an idiot, but is not so ignorant as to not at least TRY to educate themselves before posting in the APPLE ONLY section of the damned forum.

Thank you for opening my eyes, for reminding me that the entire world is full of completely helpless morons that can't do anything beyond 'Here is my reasonably vague request for information, could you please give me the information that I have expended no energy in getting for myself past typing this question'.

Ya GFY dick!

And thanks for educating me oh great one.
I now know that if some one asks a question you'll be more than happy to ruin any interest they may have.

Thanks again to everyone else.

From the points you make, I sense that you definitely is without the means to acquire a authentic Mac.

At least you are able to rest in peace at night, Apple branded items are thief's favorites.

Insanelymac forum is your mainstay now.

OP, I know that you said 13-14" display, but what are your thoughts on a netbook? Most of the hackintoshing stuff that I have seen for portables seems to pertain to netbooks.

Edu pricing doesn't extend to Apple refurbs. Last time I checked pricing through my school a refurb macbook was $50 cheaper than a new one.

One thing to think about is some of the deals you get if you buy new from Apple. You get a discount on Iworks if you buy new that you don't get if you buy refurb.

All the same, I'd wait until at least till Apple's announcement this week before making a buying decision. Perhaps the rumored tablet would fit your needs better, or a possible refresh in mbp dumping many used units into circulation.
