Trust me when I say do not get a little dog. Their constant non-stop yapping that never stops will drive the dead insane and bring out your worst stress.

Get a big dog, there are many breeds that do not shed much. Almost any lab will have minimal shedding. Dalmatians I imagine would not shed much either.

However I am a fan of shepherds. You would have a loyal dog that is not loud unless it senses potential danger that is a real threat, and not a little tweety-bird flying across your window and having those little pip-squeeks jumping and yapping for 20 minutes. Unlike those little ones too, they actually can protect and not get killed by a drunk stumble or taking a wrong step... or heaven forbid, a intruder kicking it.

They are always playful and happy dogs, you would have to go out of your way to teach them to be mean... ie constantly chained up, neglect, and perhaps mishandling... but then if you were in that situation, you would probably be mean and dangerous too.

A big dog can be a best friend, a little dog can drive you nuts.

You're pretty misinformed - Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, Jack Russells, Basenjis are all very mellow, quiet dogs - but it can also depend on their personalities. You need to keep your opinion to yourself if you don't know what you're talking about.

You just had to throw Jack Russells in there didn't you? The most insane and annoying dogs on the planet. Kind of kills the credibility of the rest of what you list. No not all little dogs are annoying just around 75% are.

Wrong. Jack Russell Terriers and Basenjis are not very mellow but are very high energy dogs. If not well exercised and trained, can be very destructive with behavioral issues.

Although you won't get them as a puppy, I'm a big fan of retired greyhounds. Really sweet and smart dogs from my experience, not much shedding, and they aren't tearing up the house half the day...really mellow most of the time, and then if you get them worked up at the dog park or whatever they tear around at a fantastic pace and are a lot of fun. Plus the chicks love them

Another vote for a pound/rescue dog. Many them come fully programmed out of the box(house broken) and are some of the most loving creatures you'll find.

They'll typically come with the first round of shots too saving you a couple $$.

But you really don't sound like you are prepared for a pet. They get sick and injured just like you. Except they can't really tell you what's wrong. So you are either forced to let them lay there and suffer or take them to a vet for a fairly pricey fee. In three years we've probably dropped close to $1000 in misc vet bills, medications, and vaccinations for our 80 pound Rhodesian/Lab mix.

She eats about $40 worth of dog food a month. Plus she goes through another $10 or so in treats/bones/toys a month.

You had better budget for that animal to run you $100-$150 a month in added costs.

Also - there are only a handful of dogs that don't shed. And most of them are either very hyper, or not a "manly" dog at all. Labs, Shepards, Goldens, Huskies, ect...they'll shed their body weight in hair in what seems like a day.

To my knowledge, there are no "big" dogs that are low shedding, let along "no" shedding. Labs and Goldens in particular are horrible.

I'm sitting here looking at 3 50+lb dogs of mine. One is 14, one is almost 14, one is 11.

I've never had one live less than 11 years, and that one had cancer.

As per the bolded, your opinion on dogs is now null and void.

edit: I see I was already beat to the punch but on a different point. Also, little dogs can be trained not to bark. My Dad spent lots of time with my Shi Tzu and he ONLY barks when someone is at the door (which we encouraged, nice to have a heads up).

lot of bad info in this thread. it sounds like you've never had a dog. try to figure out what you want out of a dog, and what you are willing to do it make it happy, and go from there. research the breed you need. please don't get a puppy and be lazy and keep it up in a room all the time, or chained outside.

Past few times I've gone to a recent dog park, I've also seen Jack Russells and 1 Basenji - both were playful, but not exceedingly, and of the 4 or 5 Jack Russells, only 1 barked. You have to TRAIN your dog, or it will act wild - this is a factor for any dog, pretty much. I was talking to the guy about his Basenji, and he said that he only brings her out on the weekends, and that he curbed her destructive behavoir with training. Your dog will do only what you allow it, and you need to be assertive and show it who's in charge.

Get a medium sized parrot - amazons are good but if you can afford it, african grey. Less maintenance and lots of fun/companionable. Of course they do live a long time and they're no help for home security.

That's your experience? How old were these dogs? You do know that Basenji's are known as escape artists and highly intelligent that require a ton of exercise or a job to perform to release it's energy.

Training can curb improper behavior but it's not going to remove it's energy and need to release it. A Jack Rusell and Basenji will require lots of exercise til at least the age of 5. Neither dog is recommended for a beginner dog owner.

we rescued a ~1.5 yr old pit bull last april. friendliest dog you will ever meet. shes the best.

if you get a puppy, be prepared to spend LOTS AND LOTS of time with it for awhile...thats very important. if youre at your job or whatever for long hours and have to leave him alone, dont get a puppy.

Most of the dogs were a few years old ... and yah, I know about Basenji's being the Houdini dog IMO though, all dogs will require a lot of attention and exercise to release their energy. I mean sure, there are mellow dogs that seem to want to lay around all day, but do you honestly think they're happy? I know our Boston likes to lay around, but that doesn't discount the fact you can tell she's a lot happier when we take her outside for a few hours to play as opposed to being couped up. Even my mom's pugs like to go for walks, and they're overweight little f's!

I agree. Lots of bad behavior can be averted with plenty of exercise. A tired dog is a good dog.

my kids are pushing for a dog. we already have one, a 4 yr old lab/ dane mix. our old dog died right before halloween of old age, and was their first dog. the best dog i ever had, a black lab we rescued from the pound when he was 3 or 4.

i really dont think you want a dog, i think youre just bored and thought a dog would kill some time. training a new pup would be hell if you havent done it before as well.

my dogs did the same. the cool thing was, if i answered the door and didnt invite the people in, the dogs wouldnt let the people even push the door open to look inside. my lab growled at the cops when they pushed my door open to look inside after i walked away to get some info for them one time. the cop slammed the door shut, scared him to death he told me. he also commended me for the training, since after that i opened the door and let him meet the dog, and he was ok with the cop after that.

bah, got tired of reading the misinformation in the thread.

Go to your local pound, make several trips, find a dog you want for >$100 that already has shots.
