Want to get my firearms permit...where to start?

OK, so I live in Massachusetts, Boston more specifically. I'd like to get my CCW...but I'm confused. I got some information here. But I'm still confused. Now Class A is a CCW, which I would like. I'd settle for Class B, which if I'm reading correctly, is you're run of the mill 'gun in your house for protection' type permit.

What I'm confused about is this: Do I fill out the permit application FIRST, or do I take the NRA training course first?? Anyone from MA. / Boston gotten their permit that could lend me a hand?

Typically you take the firearms class first. Once you've finished you get a certificate of completion, which you turn in with your permit application.

If you troll local gun boards or go to any local gun shops, I'm willing to bet there are classes specifically setup to do everything for you.

You may also want to simply look into getting a Utah or Florida CPL - but you'd have to check to see if they cover your state.

Edit: Doesn't look like MA has reciprocity agreements with any other states, so you have to get a MA permit.

EditEdit: HOLY christ they require a lot of shit. that is ridiculous! Take the firearm class first. Look into a class that will do everything for you.

Honestly, if you walk into a good gun store (good as in has a range, has classes, etc) and explain what you want to do they'll be able to set you up for the whole process. They'll be able to tell you all the forms you need to do, help you figure out what classes you need to take (and some you probably should take even if they aren't required), and help you pick out the kind of handgun that would work for you.

This is something where a bit of face to face service will help a great deal.

Definitely check with the locals. Mass is a can issue, not shall issue state. Some jurisdiction have LEO leaders that don't issue them hardly at all, other are very liberal with them. If you live in a shitty jurisdiction you may just be screwed for the CCW.

I know a guy on another board that is moving out of Mass to escape their draconian gun laws.
