Want to install linux but....

I am about to reformat and repartition my hard drive and want to install linux in a dual boot with Windows XP. I downloaded various live dvd's (all the latest versions as of yesterday) and have the following problems

Ubuntu will not load and stops with a video driver problem
Suse works but does not see the hard drives or network
Knoppix works fine

My system consists of an AMD 3000 Venice core, DFI Lanparty NF4, 1Gb Ram, ATI X700 128Mb.

Is it just that I am such a noob at linux that this isn't working, will a HD install be any different than the LiveDVDs I have, also still trying to figure out the dual boot thing so any help there would also be appreciated. Thanks.

ATI cards can be problematic and I'm not sure about the quality of drivers ATI has for the x700. You should still be set with the vesa driver when you install, though. A LiveCD doesn't always equal what the installation will be. I'd try installing Ubuntu and see how that goes first. Dirty partitions can cause a livecd to have problems mounting it...

Are you sure the LiveCD are a good burn? Maybe the problem is with the CDs rather than the distro. Maybe try the CD in a different computer or try re-burning it either with a different burner or different brand of CD and/or set at the lowest burn speed.

I downloaded full ubuntu dvd and had no problem with install...
also, ubuntu automatically installs dual boot

I just installed suse10 from cd it takes 5, had some issues that I just about have worked out but overall i like it.
I have found that a lot of live versions of linux have a tendancy to be buggier than a real install.
