:disgust: Personally there is no really shortage, only manufactors reduceding production to create artifical shortages much like the oil companies have been doing ( uh right now) . Even with the increased demand with the ddr p4 solutions it does not justify 100% increases (in some markets *thankfully not the US yet*) in ddram , if anything if the manufactorers kept the factorys opened prices would go down due to effecenties your get from economys in scale. What we got right now is the major ddr producers gouging and artifically manipulating the market (cutting production) to drive up prices, nothing more nothing less. :|

drake6: Are you one of those Ferengis who gleefully posts, "w00t!! Ordered me 1,000 of them! They better not cancel or I'm suing.", when a web site has an OBVIOUS price error? Do you think that RAM would be FREE if only those mean, ol', price-gouging capitalists would keep the factories running full-throttle until they went bankrupt?!?

Would you please tell the rest of us what your colon looks like, since you're obviously staring at it now?

As prices kept falling, I started wondering, "How the heck are they making money?", and it's clear now that THEY WEREN'T. The mergers and takeovers are meant to allow these companies to SURVIVE, not to sit around and decide how they're gonna f*ck with poor little you.

AMD and Intel are in a ferocious price war, losing money out their arses like no tomorrow, but we've all benefitted by getting faster CPUs, at lower prices, than we'd have if Intel was the only playa in da game. Unfortunately, Intel has been able to threaten/bribe the MAJOR makers like Dell and Gateway to not use AMD stuff. They're selling below cost because they're hoping their bank account can outlast AMD's. Now AMD could cut there prices even more, but they'd be unable to turn a profit, go bankrupt like K-Mart and then what do you have? ONLY Intel Inside! Sound good to you?

RAM is CHEAPER now than it was a year ago!! If you compared the prices from Jan. 2001 to Jan. 2002, you are getting more for less. It's only when you look at the price valley in between that it looks bad, but so the f*ck what?!? If you could've gotten a 512MB stick of RAM in 1995, it would've cost you $20,480!!! That's a NEW CAR! With the price drops over the years, it's like being able to go into a car dealership and buying a NEW CAR for what you'd spend on a pair of PS2 games and a memory card!! Ya dig my meaning?!? THINGS AREN'T THAT BAD!!!

Unless you're an ignorant twit, that is.

I mourn the lack of education that too many people are burdened with. They walk around yelping whatever conspiracy theories that have been inculcated into them (look it up) by liberal politicians and educators to make them willing sheep to whatever cause they want to program the herd for. That's why some people think that a $30 billion dollar tax cut wiped out a $200 billion surplus (Do the MATH, people!) and why some people think that companies should bleed money until they die, so they can save their crack money for crack.

KDOG: You're article didn't stir anything up other than the ignorance and greed of some readers. Thanks for giving a platform to do some schooling from.

The price of DDR is supposed to be back down by the end of Feb. Not back to where it was, but a little lower and stabilized. I of course waited too long even though I had warning 2 weeks before the prices moved at all. Unfortunately I didn't have the money yet (still don't, just got a ps2 and a new monitor) so I'm gonna wait a little longer.

It is very true that prices now are incredibly low compared to what they once were, but when anything goes up in price people are gonna be upset because we want the most for the cheapest. Human nature, if anyone got really happy because the price went up, then I would think that they were crazy.

Remember all those people who told you to buy as much as you can now back when memory was cheap? Well they were right.

Not really, IMO.

I know quite a few guys with half a Gig of RAM or more that they definitly have no use for. Just about as usefull as a window in the case: not required, but looks good .

i seem to remember that, no TOO terribly long ago, you could pay roughly a ratio of 2x or 4x for the amount of memory you were purchasing (for example: 64MB used to cost you 130-150 dollars and 128MB used to run you 300 dollars).

i'd say we haven't got too much to complain about.

*shrug*

edit: DefRef, looks like your eloquent post covered this subject in-depth. I should have more thoroughly read the message thread. Great post, DefRef!

There are a lot of young people who can't remember that far back, on the forums. Quoting previous technology and prices to them is not going to have as much of an impression as you may think. Only those who have been earning money a few years watching the computer scene can really feel how much cheaper things are now. But an important point is missed already. All the specifications and prices were relevant to their times. There was a time not so long ago when 8mb was a princely amount. And software was much smaller. It came on floppy disc. Chances were you were using in many cases the same type of programs then as now, still at the fastest speed that was available. And the price of software has not improved that I can see.
Still, if you look at comparitively wretched mid 80's dinosaur PCs costing the price of a new little car...

<< another factor that's often quoted is the arrival of XP & its higher memory requirements! >>

Wasn't M$ running a special where you would instantly get free RAM with the purchase of Windows XP ??

RAM prices ddn't go below variable cost, but it sure as hell was below average cost. that way there were paying at least some of their fixed costs (plants mostly). some people just have no clue. companies have to make a profit to stay in business.

Damn...keep on posting before I mean to....

But yeah, it's just basic economics. The industry is experiencing a push toward it's equalibrium point (higher cost and less supply than what they've had in the past).

prices might be higher than recently but how long could someone expect them to be rockbottom and dirt cheap? I said 'expect', not 'wish' or 'hope'.
