I do not know what video card or monitor I am going to get and very confused.

I am waiting on the new amd cards then I can make a better selection of what to buy.
New AMD, N or older 7970 or 7950 I am not brand bound.

I want to know about the monitor requirements.
the monitor will be a 2560 27" and not sure on the video card memory.
Is 2GB enough for this, what about 120hz?

I just want to buy enough to run it, and maybe some eye candy

using something like BF at 120hz I was reading on some forms that at 120hz dual 7950 were not good enough.

Overall I just want to buy a card that can do what I want.
And no I don't want to buy dual titans, I hate working nights and weekends LOL

If you're referring to the refresh rate of the monitor then you mean 120hz, not Mhz, there are no 2560x1440 panels that can cope with 120hz.

2560x1440 is a very large number of pixels so requires a lot of power, you're going to have to go with a very high end card to play games in maxed out settings and get a smooth frame rate.

see I told you I don't know LOL

QNIX QX2710 Evolution 2 ....... 27″ 2560×1440 ~90Hz – 130Hz
this is the monitor I was looking at. They are out of glossy so that is probably what I want

Yup that is definitely the monitor to get these days (or its twin brother the X-Star DP2710). Make sure to get the DVI-only input, matte coat version.

As for video cards, that depends on what games you want to play. For example, Battlefield 4 recently announced they recommend 3 GB of video ram. That being the case, you may want to go with a GTX 780 or two GTX 770 4 GB's.

I was running my Overlord 1440p at 60hz on a single GTX 680 2GB, I went to SLI to make sure I could push most games to 90-110hz/fps when I started to OC my monitor.

2gb vram is fine for current games with little to no AA. Most games I can run at max details with just post process AA like fxaa. at 60-90fps.

Based on AMD hawaii top end GPU's I'd say a single top end with 3GB+ vram will be great for 1440p+120hz.

thanks everyone this is starting to make since.

QuantumPion I was just about to ask if the X-Star was the same monitor.

I wanted to get a QNIX because I could get it thru an amazon seller with the pic perfect for $322 hoping if I have problems amazon will back it up. Not sure about resellers but I think they will.

The are oos and won't be restocked until sept 22

Just remember that overclocking some of these dodgy brands of IPS monitors is unreliable, it's not covered under warranty and the response time of panel isn't enough to keep up with the refresh rate.

For max settings I'd seriously consider at least a 780 or SLI of anything below that, my 2560x1600 panel for the most part does well on 2x 580's OC'd

Would a 580 be enough to power a 2560x1440 60 hz ? I've been eyeing a Viewsonic VP-2770 and am curious how well my 580 could power it. Don't need max settings or anything, but would like to at least be able to get decent fps with decent settings. I know it's slightly underpowered for 1440, but I would like to wait until the next gen (8xx).

@fix

You could definitely get by on a single 580 for a few months at 1440P, In newest games you may need to run med/low on some settings (Ambient occlusion/shadows/post processing) and medium textures, and no AA. But Metro last light for example, you should be fine on lower settings.

Right. The panel is made for 60hz and some users report poor colors, banding, frame skipping and other issues when they run them beyond 60hz. So if you buy one and it does not go above 60hz reliably it would be no basis to send it back because they'd plug it in and find it was working and you'd be stuck with shipping charges both ways in all likelihood. These monitors at 60hz are excellent though, but I would not rely on them for photo and graphics work as they are not calibrated and would not be as accurate as an A+ panel.

Not seeing the one "Pixel Perfect" for $322 on Amazon?

Check out this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/PERFECT-PIX...4938?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item4ac95b787a $289 Pixel Perfect with Free Shipping

Much cheaper and maybe Paypal could back you up if something goes wrong?

It will work fine in many games and get you by till your ready to upgrade.

Borderlands 2
Sleeping Dogs
ASC3

I played all those games max settings with my 580 on a Dell 1440p, I had to turn AA down in sleeping dogs but the extra res made up for it.

I have an X-star and it is a great Monitor if you are lucky enough to get a good one. I would say if you are ready to open it and fix any possible light bleeding and they having a really bad stand then you should go for it. Mine has no dead or stuck pixels and very minimal light bleeding. I opened it up to remove the stub from the stand since I have it with a wall mount. I got a 7970 GHz edition and I just finished playing Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light on very high and with the minimal AA possible (do not see the need for it at this high resolution but you might want it) It ran so smooth I was amazed
I would say whatever card you get make sure it has 3+ GB ram unless you want to upgrade soon. I plan to keep mine for 3+ yrs hopefully just like I did with my 5850.

Got to this site and read about the light bleed issues and how to fix them. I knew before hand and I was ready to fix it myself. It is not hard to open and I did anyway to get out the stand stub.

I was waiting for a Dell but they also have a lot of problems with the light bleed and getting spots (blue or yellow) so I decided to save about 50% and get an X-Star and just fix it if I had to.

That one mentions it has a funky power connector, two round rods? Does it cost extra to get a US power adapter?

All you do is replace that power cord with one like you get with a PSU and plug it in.That's how my catleap was.
