I have currently built a new pc with the following specs that i want to overclock. Someone please tell me of the best settings i can do to overclock this thing.

Mobo: Gigabyte Ga-965p-s3 S775
Cpu: Pentium D 820....soon to be Core 2 duo E6400
Memory: 2GB (4x512m) Corsair Valueselect DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
Vid: Sapphire Radeon x1800xt 512M
PSU: 550W Raidmax.
HDD: Maxtor Diamondmax 320gig ata133
OD: Lite on DVD RW Drive

I would like to know the best oc's i can get with the PD and the C2D.

No idea about the PSU, but that 533 valueram is going to seriously hurt your OC, sell it and get 2x1GB 667 or 800 and you'll be good to go as far as memory goes.

If your serious about OC besides the memory you should consider an aftermarket cooler instead of a standard heatsink fan unit and some arctic silver 5 thermal greese when you buy your E6400.

Ehh, the stock Intel cooler that comes with the C2Ds is actually very good, apparantly they learned something about cooling back in the P4 days

I do have an aftermarket cooler...guess i forgot to mention taht....its a gigabyte cooler but it is a 120mm fan with a very large heatsink that sits probably 4-5 inches off my motherboard....and it keeps my junky PD820 at about 33c at 3.4ghz. and about 42 under full load

yeah....i dotn know about that psu...it did a good job with my cousins computer...he had a c2d e6300 and had it at about 3ghz.....that did good....he told me to leave it on overnight and let a program run that keeps stress on it....i dont know what it was but he said its going to see how good that computer can do. He said it did very well being a psu that isnt a good brand. He had an 8800gtx, that c2d and 2g of ram and he said it would do fine for me...im looking to get a 2.13ghz c2d and get it to like 3ghz and leave it at about there. What else can i do other than the ram and psu because i have new ram for it. Its corsair valueselect 2gig (2x 1gig) DDR2 667. No heatsinks on the ram. Will that ram suffice the overclock that I want to get?

not if its valueRAM

and i would seriously consider changing out that PSU ESPECIALLY if you want to overclock.

bottom line is you're still missing critical overclock components like the ram and PSU

I think you guys are jumping the gun, here. Sure, the DDR2-533 *may* limit his overclocking, but I highly doubt it is so rigid that it will refuse to be unstable at higher speeds. Besides, the 820 runs on FSB200, which means he can overclock his CPU 33% while keeping the RAM at 533 or below. The stock cooler is just fine, too. As for the PSU, it should be plenty, even for an overclocked 820.

I'd begin at FSB220, and walk it up from there in 10-MHz intervals. I wouldn't be surprised if you get 3.5 GHz (FSB250) out of it, though you may be stuck with 3.2 GHz or so. Just make sure that your memory multiplier is set to 2.

yeah the psu does great......alteast that is what my cousin told me and he is into all that IT stuff and junk. But what i would like to know is if that ram i have now would be decent enough to use to put an E6400 up to 3ghz. I dont plan on going any higher or anything. just to set it at that and to play my games without lag or any technical problems is exactly what I want.

There's no way to tell until you try. 3 GHz would require RAM speeds of 860 MHz, and your memory is only rated for 533 MHz. You might get lucky, or you might not. Something like 2.6 GHz might be more reasonable. In the end, though, you'll just have to try and see.

Yeah 2.6 would still be good for me because i can smoke all my friends computers with it since they bought those pentium extremes....dont these compare to them or atleast keep up with them?
