Hey ho!

In my search for entertainment, I realised it's been a while since I played an MMORPG. Last one was Age of Conan which I only got to level 31 and didn't had enough time to continue, but I enjoyed the game.

Now i'm looking for something new...I know FFXIV just released today...look promising but many players have bad things to say...while some have good comments...it's looks like a 50/50 for now. Didn't tried the beta, just saw the screenshots and trailers.

Are there any MMOs out there worth the try?
Monthlee fees and paying for the retail is ok!

Try out LOTRO, its free to play. Everquest 2 just went Free to play today as well. Obviously limitations with F2P accounts, but you can get a good taste of the game.

these are free to play MMOs and are instance based with a common town area & no open world. they offer items to be purchased through the cash shop, and players that choose to support the company by purchasing cash shop items will have some sort of advantageous benefit from doing so.

Vindictus - 3D action combat with RPG skill system, early access open beta is going on atm (need a key), but I believe open beta (no key required) will begin Oct 6

Intro to Story Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDCHHpBn2rM
Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8W__Hs5boI

Dungeon Fighter Online (DFO) - 2D Arcade Beat Em Up combat with RPG skill system. there are 23 different subclasses which can also have very different skill builds within each subclass, so gameplay can vary greatly. I advise heavily customizing keyboard control scheme to WASD movement and Numpad for skill usage or a controller can be used (third party software is needed to enable controller usage).

PvE video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVz3MsSMVqk

PvE summary: an end-game dungeon called Dogs of Ranjerus (not available in DFO yet). it's farmed for item drops called Chronicle items that do things like add damage, reduce cooldowns, increase size, etc of skills. one of the biggest reasons why I play DFO is because the time commitment when dungeoning is almost always less than 10 minutes when grouping.

PvP video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq8YpEUqoJI&feature=player_embedded

PvP summary: collection of 1vs1 duels between a Ranger and Female Spitfire

Everquest 2 is still worth checking out. It seems to have become the testing grounds for ideas, because the class system has gone through at least 2 complete overhauls, starting areas have changed a couple of times, and it's basically become a whole new game several times since release. It is free all the way to level 80, but the restrictions will quickly want you subscribing because it blocks your ability to send mail and restricts your inventory size.

I think i'm gonna give FFXIV a try...
Reading more and more good things about players.

Looks like the kind of MMO that is not holding your hand and let you discover things on your own, love that!

Finally I got a month of Age of Conan, less expensive (already got the game) and I'm fairly well geared for now.

Maybe gonna get FFXIV too next week...

Eve is the only MMO that I was able to get into. Mostly due to the very open nature of the game.

Check out Direct2drive... they have the latest Eq2 expansion (along with everything else that's out) for 5$ for the next couple of hours before they change their games.

Can't go wrong for that price and after the free month nothing stops you from going F2P although you'll be extremely weak compared to paying players.

Edit: This is on their daily deals they've been having. I don't know when it expires or for all I know it might already be gone... but it was there last night!

I really like the sound of FFXIV as I played FFXI back in the day and they seem to have addressed some of the issues I had with FFXI. However, it does sound like it's having a painful introduction.

You have reached Shamone rank 3. Moonwalking trait earned. You may now purchase a monkey.

it would be more fun if they started you with 4 Billion dollars and it was a race to spend it all on stupid stuff and semi scam charities.
I'll buy my 14 yr old cousin as my accountant and hire some excon to be my auditor, I'll pay 140 million for some bones...ect...

I started playing LOTRO. Its good. It couldnt be more stereotypical of a MMO game. Collect 8 of these, speak to this person, travel to this location. So far.

Its free. Its fun. So far, I havent needed to buy anything from the online store. (Which IS expensive for the items there.)

The installation and account creation was easy.

I'm really liking DDO (also by Turbine). All quests are instanced, except for the large explorer areas. You can come up with some very creative builds.

Just a comment on LOTRO: Unless you are SUPER casual, then I wouldn't consider it free, as unlocking content the "free" way requires a ridiculous amount of deed grinding (which is a cost).

LOTRO is better described as pay-as-you-go instead of a standard subscription, where you buy content packs as you want them instead of just paying a monthly fee for access to everything. It's a great deal for gamers who don't want to lose access to all of their stuff because their subscription runs out, but I wouldn't call it free.

...Or, you can check around for cheap box copies of LotRo. I found old retail copies of the original and Mines of Moria for $3-5. That'll get you in a number of areas you'd have to buy from the store, and make you a second tier player permanently.

given the mixed feedback and lack of a free trial, there's no way I'd shell out $50 just to try out FFXIV.

I played EQ2 but never got much into it. I was putzing around in the starting area and somehow accidentally attacked a guard and I was like "fuck this."

LotRO was really enjoyable. now that it's F2P, I'll still play it and knock around on my lowbie guardian when I've got time to kill.

WoW still stands as the only MMO that I've been addicted to other than EQ, though.

How is Age of Conan these days? I stopped playing about a year and a half ago because it got too boring at higher levels. I think I got my main to lvl 71 or so before I quit.

Is it worth going back to? I remember it being beautiful graphically and I liked the melee combat system.

There's only one MMO remotely worth playing: EVE Online.

Now, a little rant. Feel free to ignore....

That being said I don't understand why anyone would want to waste their money on MMOS. The very concept is ridiculous and dumb.

1)MMOs are designed such that you can never "win" or truly "get somewhere" there is always that unachievable "true leetness" factor floating somewhere like a dream you are striving for but you can never get there. There will always be people better than you in any MMO. The people may be playing(correction, grinding) much more than you, or they may simply be spoiled rich with nowhere to spend their money that comes too easy to them, so they will spend it to buy the best items, gear, etc, and these folks will still ultimately pwn you in PvP and laugh at you calling you a "gay ass n00b". You may argue, that you are playing "just for fun" and you dont care if you'll get anywhere in the MMO that you are playing. But who are we kidding here?! If you didn't want to get somewhere, you'd quit a long time ago.

2)MMOs are designed to suck you in such that you waste your whole day, maybe even your whole life playing. Many quests, raids, teamups work in such a way where you cannot "save" before you finish a task, forcing you to play several hours at a time.

3)It's just STUPID to pay $15 every month as a "fee" for something you cannot OWN forever. Think about it.... Imagine... how many games you can buy on STEAM for $15. and these are not just some shitty games we are talking about here. There are many GOOD games available at this price. These games are there to stay with you FOREVER offering countless hours of entertainment until you burn out. And you may come back to them in the future anytime you wish and play for FREE. Also, if you multiply $15 by 12 months in a year you get $180!!!! That's a brand new mid to high end video card or cpu or a spacious hard drive every year! I don't know about you, but something like this is a hell of a lot more important to me than paying an MMO. These computer parts I mentioned will allow me to enjoy games and more for several years, while you can enjoy your MMO for only one year at the same price. This same $180 can go toward a gym membership, a new bike, plenty of food, or clothing. Things much more important than an mmo that you cannot even "keep".

4)You cannot sell your MMO account. To me this idea alone is ludicrous. Isn't it "I" that paid the money to the subscription? Isn't it I that put months, maybe years of hard work into that account? Why then should the game company have full rights to it? I understand how the sale of individual virtual items should be illegal, but the sale of accounts should be allowed.

Sadly I cannot escape from EVE Online now when I have an account. I cannot sell the account and I cannot stop playing it either because it's "there" and I cannot just ignore it and pretend it's not there. I canceled my subscription, but I know I'll come back to this damned game again at some point. That being said I have sworn never to start another MMO ever again unless I can sell the account.

bullshitting with my guildmates during a blackwing lair clear was more fun than any single player game I've ever played.

I like the fact that you can never "win" an MMORPG. That's why I play. I hate paying $50 for a game, beating it, and then what? Play it again and again for the same ending? Fun.

Most of the enjoyment for me is the social aspect of an MMORPG. I also like that I can load up the game and have a completely different experience from the day before. Some days rule, some days my group gets pwned bad, but that's what keeps it interesting.

At $15/mo. it's actually very cheap considering all the time put into it. And it's not sitting on my shelf collecting dust after a month like single player games at $50 a pop.
