I was actually pleasantly surprised to notice that the installer allows you to throttle your download and upload if you so choose so that those of us without stupid fast connections don't have our bandwidth destroyed while updating.

Dont remember running into that error with the installer I had, but then again, they installer I used was the original hanger module installer, which has been updated quite a bit since then.

Actually looking at my installed list, I have 2005 redist, 2008, 2010, and 2013 all installed....

Yep, I got the same error. That's a surefire way to get people to not bother with your game.

However, if you click out of this error, it will finish to install and works regardless..at least it did for me.

What's worse is that this is only the arena match and the hangar and a few ships and it's TWELVE GIGS.

When they have a live persistent universe, the install is going to need to be a shitload larger. Either that or this install is bloated full of future-BS that doesn't need to be included for the tiny bit of functionality that exists so far.

Either way, ridiculous.

He has repeatedly told us in the main SC thread that it's all a scam and he won't be getting it. Obviously the game upsets him in some way and he deals with it by posting new threads about SC.

I already explained why, but I'll expound on it if you want.

The one single arena setting is an insignificantly tiny fraction of what the game will have to offer. If that tiny fraction is 12 gigs, one of two things is taking place.

The first possible situation is that that whole 12 gigs is required for something so simple, meaning that the main game will be ludicrously huge, comparing what's offered in the arena with what the developers brag about including in the finished product.

The second possible situation is that the 12 gigs include a lot more than just what is required for the arena functionality in which case poor decisions were made in what to include in this release -as in, including a lot more code than is necessary to feature the arena gameplay experience.

Both situations are pretty stupid.

Can't tell if serious. "more code then necessary" lolwut, its a crowd funded game in alpha. They're constantly adding new stuff in every update plus stuff they need to change in the back end. Welcome to software development 101. No kidding there's code for future stuff.

Plus optimization has barely begun, if you're complaining about file sizes and errors and leftover junk files, you should just come back when the game comes out. Its not like its going anywhere. Nobody is forcing you to try this alpha.

Also, to explain about the file sizes, a lot of it is mainly from the ships itself, and since they're all mostly in the game as custom texture objects. Its crazy how much detail they added, we have textures ranging from low to insane and particles and stuff that take up tons of space.

Though the maps themselves don't take up that much space, its more of a file to tell the game where every texture goes.

I will say this thread got me to play SC for the first time. It seems ok. The graphics are really cool, and I liked the crash mechanics.

It seems like one of those games where it will be so complex that I'll just never take the time to really learn how to play.

I, too, think the prices the guy is charging already is pretty ludicrous but if the vision he has truly comes together I suppose it will be worth it to some.

I don't much get the argument about the game size...Lot's of games have huge file sizes these days and as others have said this is a Pre-Alpha with some pretty amazing graphics.

45 bucks is ludicrous? Assuming you're talking about the basic package with the game, beta access, etc. Hell, I pledged 35 bucks 2 years ago and got access to everything.

Then wait for it to be released, read forums then decide. Personally I doubt the expensive ships will be that much better and even if they are then don't play. Games should be fun not an esport.

It's been said over and over again, ships that you can buy on the site for $X is only during the pre-release period, to generate additional funding. The ships are "rewards" for donating money to the game. When the game launches you won't see these ships for sale for real money, they'll be acquired in-game like you would expect.

The game is not going to be free to play, so it doesn't have pay to win where the free players have to deal with extra grind.

I've said this before in other SC threads before: If someone wants to drop $1000 on an Idris he will need a bunch of friends to actually operate it effectively. I'd feel comfortable attacking an Idris with an equal number of fighter pilots in basic fighters.

Its hardly pay to win, more like pay to support the creation of a game and save in game time of grinding

I gave it a try. Keep in mind I have not kept up with it or tried anything related to it out up to now.

Overall first impressions are positive. Graphics are top notch, performance was pretty good on my old 480. There is a dogfight/drone mode and a few maps to play around in.

One thing I wasn't sure I liked was how the aiming was tied to the steering but not in a 1 to 1 direct ratio. When trying to aim at something it became very easy to oversteer completely the wrong way. Also while walking around the station the mouse response was slow so I upped the sensitivity quite a bit, this had a negative effect while flying I think (you can change it while flying but..).

The big negative I didn't like was that for every "action" you did had a scripted motion to it. This means slowly plodding into position. (Like climbing into the ship, or into the pilot seat). I'd prefer the old click a button and you do it instantly, or simply walk up the stairs with a direction key. On the other hand, I don't imagine this is something you would do often overall, so it probably minor nitpicking.
