Here is a network that works for me, check it out.network

I basically ran it this way because I needed two computers to have seperate IP's so my Son and I could play games online at the same site at the same time AND still have my internal LAN.

Thanks spidey. Great topic you have here, BTW! I see the Netgear RT314 "has limited port forwarding". Tsk, tsk, I wish I knew what that meant!

Doesn't matter, because the SMC "Barricade" has the dial-up support. I'll sift through the Hardware Router Comparison Chart and see if anything else will do the job for the same money, BUT not before studying the Introduction to Hardware Routers. I need all the help I can get!

At this point in time, I'm about to add a third PC to our network. Up till now I've been using a crossover cable and ICS. I'm currently on dial-up, but plan to go to cable or DSL within a few months. I figured I'd be saving money in the long run by buying and using a router/switch now, instead of a hub. $86.00 for the SMC is the most I'll have to spend so far. How much lower will they go in a couple months? How much would a hub cost me now? Seems like a no brainer... :Q

Edit: Did I say no brainer? WTF am I waiting for? I just saw that this SOB also has a friggin printer port on it! A Com port, a printer port and $20.00 rebate! DUH! I'm hitting the update button and heading over to Onvia to buy it right now! Buh-bye!

Hardware solutions are far superior to software. They are faster, more secure, more transparent to the network and the applications ran and with better compatibility. I'd get real close to calling someone that thinks software solutions are better than hardware an idiot.

LOL @ Russ. So true. I see this at work way to regularly

when it comes to computers. Hardware is always better than software, whether it be a firewall, 56k modem, math co-processor, etc. calculator [vs some book with tables]. The problem comes when $$ is involved and software is always the same or cheaper than hardware.

i was going to try and share using the 2 NIC's in one machine w/crossover cable till I read this thread. I took the advice of those here and got a BIG device from a member on this board, glad I did.
It was very easy to setup, I know zero about networking and had never done it before. Now we have our own little home network, and everyone is happy sharing the cable modem.

thanks for the good advice all.

I'll tell you another advantage to hardware over software. If you do an installs for small businesses (which I do), it is a helluva a lot easier to diagnose a problem over the phone with newbies, when dealing with hardware.

They relate much better to little blinking lights then complicated software.

I just switched from Sygate server on W2K to SMC Barricade. My W2K machine is very stable, I leave it on for weeks with no need to reboot. With hardware router, I have to reboot it 3 times in the past 2 days to get into the web Admin page. From what I have read so far, every cheap router has it's own shortcoming, so I think software solution is still acceptable until routers becomes rock stable.

actually, there is a CAT10 cable. Resco Enterprises (TM) has been one of the advocates of this technology, and are pioneers in CAT10 implementation and deployment =)

welll so much for cat 6 and 7 being in draft mode, the new building we moved into has cat 6 or 7 in there .. already precabled, but a company that does cabling. They were pushing for it (even though it was expensive). I was against it,but where is the IT dept's voice when it comes to decision like this.

Oh well.. if it aint working, dont blame me. I told you it wont.
Cisco didnt certify the cable for the 4006 switch, however the company said it will work. Lets hope they are right, and performance doesnt degrade, or I will have to do some butt kicking.
